Yeah emim I agree. I need him to hold those notes half q second longer like he does on the original. Cutting the vocal melody short feels way too off.

It's also interesting hearing these songs played with way less distortion in their guitars...definitely works for their new material but makes some of the metal-y stuff on this album sound pretty bad in my opinion cuz you just wouldn't write it like that if you were going to play with that tone. Very interesting listen.

Overall, it ironically sounds like a band playing an old album with their "new" sound....basically flawlessly but without the urgency, earnestness and intensity of the original.

Rerecording is such a blatant cash grab. Disappointed in this band for sinking so low. Absolutely no (artistic) reason for worse versions of the same material to exist.

If anything, it should be Identity Crisis getting the rerecord, but no one cares about that record so it wouldn't sell as well (theoretically).

It's such a transparent economic calculus behind this re-release. And the biggest insult is it starts with a song called "Cold Cash and Colder Hearts." Congrats, Thrice. You've become what you hate.

Ehhh wouldn’t call it a cash grab when Dustin has said in the past the band wasn’t happy with the compressed sound of the original, if they had been doing this re-recording for all the albums I could see it leaning to that but it feels like this was more of an artistic move they’ve thought about for awhile

that's so hyperbolic lmao

they more likely just thought it'd be fun to revisit and re-record with some guests and release something that isn't compressed to shit like the original.

It's pretty cool. Not sure where it will ultimately settle next to the original. Peaceful co-existence, hopefully. It's definitely fun to listen through it and see what changes they've made.

dustin has said before he hated how AITA was mixed originally so now i feel like I have to listen to the new one with an incredibly critical ear

it's not any more of a cash grab than any other re-recording.

Just because the band, or a member of the band, claims to dislike the sound of the original recording doesn't make this any less of a cash grab. If they had anything new to say, any burning artistic sentiments, they'd write new songs to capture them.

A cash grab can be "fun." A cash grab can be a "good time." But it's still a cash grab.

Now, this particular cash grab isn't fun or a good time. This whole thing sounds rushed. The vocals have no energy and are even off-time in places. None of the guest spots are substantial. Any lingering greatness here is merely residue from what made the original recording great (riffs, lyrics, etc.)

I wish I had a time machine and could present this version to 2003 me and listen without the benefit of nostalgia.

But my initial take is some songs really benefitted from the re-recording (Under a Killing Moon, Blood Clots and Black Holes, Abolition of Man, title track) some really, really did not (All That's Left), and most are about the same level of quality. Blood Clots and Abolition are interesting because they've never been my favorite tracks on the original, but they really benefitted from this

Pretty much how I feel. New mix is great and most of the songs keep pace with the originals with a few missteps (vocals on Silhouette 😡), but the energy is way different. I'll probably listen to the og 90% of the time.
