This probably sounds really pretentious but I honestly believe you can't appreacite how unique this really is if you're not a huge (avant-garde) jazz/blues fan like I am

i'd say it's precisely the opposite, the more of the artist's influences you know the less unique he seems.

He definitely sounds less weird than I thought he did before, but I don't think he sounds less unique. I've certainly never heard any album that's truly like this, and that's mostly because it adopts many of the common tropes of blues/jazz and reappropriates them into rock with vaguely psychedelic tinges.
If you view all music under the same microscope I can see how you'd see it as less unique, but under the perspective of rock music and such, which is meant to follow its own set of rules, I can't really say I know of any peers to this album.
The music is so good in any case
