I love this album. I wish I could speak French, so I could fully appreciate it, but I find it musically intoxicating despite the language barrier.
Hope to have it on vinyl someday. It's been a tough find here in the states.

The lyrics are definitely worth understanding, especially on L'Heptade in my opinion. Yet I would be stupid to blame you for not speaking French

Onirium - Haven't heard all of L'Heptade yet, I'm ashamed to say. Need to get on that.
French is a beautiful language and I wish I had gained an appreciation for it sooner. I would like to experience the full message of these records as closely as possible though. Is there maybe a reliable translation of the lyrics that I could reference?

Aside from signing up for a few years of language courses (I've considered it), a decent translation seems like the next best thing.

@bnelso you can find Harmonium's three albums easily on Ebay and Discogs. This one is all over Ebay for not too much.

Thanks Frippertronics. I checked Discogs. I'll probably order from there this week. I may just throw L'Heptade in the cart while I'm at it. I'm exciting to hear the rest of that album.

An appropriate, literal translation would be hard to find, since it generally rhymes, and often plays on expressions and words proper to the French-canadian culture. I could try translating some specific parts if you want, but it wouldn't catch the essence

no prob, I got L'Heptade a while back but never bothered to buy the rest. To be honest, they're not as much of a priority to me as L'Heptade was. Though I can see myself completing the collection soon enough.

as for the language, I have no desire to translate it. The mystery of what these guys are even saying and how foreign it is to me is part of the beauty of this stuff.

I understand. Thanks Onirium. I won't burden you with that. I know that takes time. It seems you need to have an understanding of French-Canadian culture to fully grasp the essence these guys were pulling from.
I don't have that, unfortunately. However, I feel I can still hold this record in high regard based on the power of the music and the feelings I get from its overall atmosphere. The experience is incomplete, but it is still so moving. I suppose that speaks to the quality of Harmonium's music. Even when separated from the culture that defines it, it is still pretty powerful.

The vocals are so pleasent I honestly wouldn't care if they were singing complete gibberish.

Yeah fripp knows, I'm content knowing what the song titles mean in english, just gotta let the music and vocal melodies fill in the blanks

Reading this album's lyrics has definitely helped me learn a lot of French vocabulary that I probably wouldn't have learned until I got to the point of taking upper-level French courses.
|
| |
Well a lot of it comes from French-Canadian expressions and of course the French-Canadian accent. It's not the most universal French which makes it even harder for most to understand. I showed some France French people En Pleine Face and they barely understood anything lol

This band at times sounds like a mellower Comus

Talons - I think I can kind of here what you mean. They have moments that feel similar in spirit to Comus' more pastoral moments (eg, The Herald).
