Dunno, I think Whole Lotta Love's riff is just as well known as Smoke on the Water

Smoke on the Water has a catchy riff, but most of DP's best songs are little-known to the public.

Kinda like Priest: Breaking the Law is the only song many know by them. Not that many people know about Tyrant, Victim of Changes, Beyond the Realms of Death or Dreamer Deceiver.

I wouldn't say Sabbath has that problem though. Quite a few of their best songs are well-known.

Smoke on the Water is the most well known riff indeed. Of course it's not the best DP song. Led Zeppelin have more known songs, but people don't know it's them. I knew Immigrant Song, Kashmir, Stairway to Heaven and others before I learnt the name Led Zeppelin.... Now, Black Sabbath may be more ''obscure'', with a very stretched definition of the word, as I think they came after I knew about LZ and DP.

Metallica songs, specifically Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, One, and Nothing Else Matters, are all much more well

known among non-metal heads than anything by Sabbath

War Pigs, Paranoid, Black Sabbath, N.I.B., and Iron Man are all known quite well if I'm not mistaken.

Everyone knows the Sabbath name, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who haven't heard a single Sabbath song
