Here is one of the absolute worst pieces of floudery Pitchfork fanfic I have ever laid eyes on: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/the-prodigy-fat-of-the-land-album-b2112341.html

that article is making some weird logical jumps to support its (false) narrative that it's not considered a classic but also i think it makes a good point about "smack my bitch up" - that song is obviously really misogynistic and to pretend it isn't or that it doesn't matter if it is is at minimum in extremely poor taste. doesn't mean you can't like the album but let's not pretend that's not a problem

Ngl part of the reason it's in such poor taste is that it's so gratuitous and superficial with its title/imagery, and I find it very hard to care one way or another past that. Like, yes the song is misogynistic (or, more accurately, indulges misogyny in a way that would never be solicited today) but idk if there's anything more to be learned than don't use ill-advised word in insensitive context

Misogyny is misogyny. At least the rest of this is such a killer 90s snapshot.

It's the same people that show up to SOAD and RATM concerts with Nazi tattoos. The bands aren't promoting fascist ideologies, but people find something to relate to nonetheless. Let's not kid ourselves, but an energetic battle cry like "smack my b**** up" is gonna rile people up, one way or another. If it had influenced someone to "smack THEIR b**** up" then they are probably using music as justification/fuel for their continued actions and not it being the impetus for their action.

Also it's a fantastic song, kind of a mega classic.

Remember a time when Keith’s behaviour and hair style caused more fuss than the album inlays nazi quotes, songs about clouting women and videos glamorising sex, drugs and violence?

Any minor shortcomings of this album get overridden by just how sick the first five tracks are. And the chad crab cover. And the Firestarter. And Narayan. And...
To think someone would release shit so fresh and timeless in '97 is unbelievable.

Less progressive than MFtJG, and a bit exhausting to me at times, but still great cuts here like smack, breath, mindfields and overall pretty likeable in my opinion despite it's harsh hardcore edginess. Also I feel it's sound is outdated while the first two albums maintain a nostalgic quality to them more than the industrial sound that is present here on tracks like firestarter and funky shit. Also fuel my fire is great
