"Yeah. Anyone with a taste in good music would easily consider Fleet Foxes a superior band to Mumford &
Sons. It's like comparing Radiohead to Snow Patrol"
please don't

Sounds to me like banjo cliches you would expect folk music to sound like matched with lyrical one
liners straight out of a Twilight movie. =/
The entire album is melodramatic. It's not emotional; it's over acting.
And don't worry dude, I won't compare Radiohead to Snow Patrol...it's just...hahaha =)

I will agree to disagree here. Having gone through some serious heartbreak a few years back, I can tell you that a lot of his words struck very serious chords with me. Cliche sure, melodramatic probably, but it is definitely emotional
(also, I'm mostly defending this album, as I was disappointed with the songs I've heard off their upcoming album and by their live performance)

Sucks these dudes got famous and not Laura Marling.
|

Yeah, Laura Marling is very talented. =/
I'm just sayin' if you're looking to mend a broken heart, turn to Bon Iver not Mumford & Mickey Mouse Sons. =)

probly, but while 'these guys are famous and they're not as good as ...' is undeniably true for a large number of acts and they're bringing genres together rather than being pioneers, I can't see how this is any worse than good. I give something a 1.5 if I just have to leave the room if I hear almost anything on the album. If 'Dust Bowl Dance' pops up on the radio or at a friend's house, do you really have to leave the room that instant or demand the station be changed?
Julian Plenti is... Skyscraper --> now that's a very poor album (poor Paul Banks)

Yes, because it's not very good.

I kinda rate on the merit of the music. I tend to ignore accolades, popularity and all those other things and focus on what I am hearing. =)
Now, as a big fan of folk music from the 40's onward, the album and the songs feel blended, filtered and finally coated in sugar to give the best darn pop experience they can give, then they sprinkle folk elements on top.
Which isn't all a bad thing but for me, the falseness of everything that is going on through the music, lyricism and even the vocal accents is just too much, I can't appreciate it man. =/
But you know, I'm going to stay optimistic and wait for their sophomore release and see what they've learned. =)

haha -- next album's gonna be worse i think... dunno much about folk music, but this stuff's nifty for me. While I do love delving into less accessible stuff (ie animal collective), after a few listens, I still haven't seen any kind of upside in Fleet Foxes that I haven't seen with Local Natives, The Morning Benders, Freelance Whales, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver or here.
Clicks are funny things sometimes, but I would be utterly shocked if a click jolted them up to a 5, or even a 4.

Well to begin; Local Natives, The Morning Benders, Freelance Whales and Grizzly Bear are not folk
bands, so... =P
Bon Iver is arguable though if you are to consider him folk, it would be barely a folk band. Just
because it's mostly acoustic, doesn't make it folk music.
What Fleet Foxes have in terms of folk music over those acts is; being folk music. To really
appreciate them you have to travel back to CSN (which Fleet Foxes far surpass) Woody Guthrie and
Dock Boggs.
This will help you appreciate the growth of folk music Fleet Foxes bring and as far as folk goes,
it's not an accessible genre, despite what a lot of contemporary acts give off, it's very subtle,
quiet and 'mellow' so much so a lot of people find folk music boring.
And that is why you hear people consider Fleet Foxes 'boring' because it's actual folk music. =P
With this however comes talented singers, great song writing, structure and beautifully simplistic
lyricism on top of subtly. =)
Hence why bands like Mumford & Sons don't click with me. It reminds me of Highway 61 Revisited (Bob
Dylan) however lacks in instrumental performance and lyricism. It just sort of emits this 'meh'
response from me. =/
And hopefully they improve because I'm sure they're all great guys but all the words they speak in
song are like prep rallies from cheerleaders. They're like Glee, with sort of false hearted words
bound to their tongues. I genuinely distrust their lyricism, dislike their harmonies and grow tired
of their simple song structure. =/

too bad, i stopped playing after 4 =/. The Rodney Mullen video you get for beating the game with him in Tony Hawk 3 is probably responsible for my AFI phase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXrzFKXFtUE). Way too much fucking talent there (edit: Rodney Mullen not Davey Havok et al)
