Empire is their black album and I mean that in the most positive way possible. buuuuuuut Silent Lucidity is the worst song by a country fucking mile from their classic era. I fucking loathe that song

Empire is most definitely their black album - great comparison. Silent Lucidity is their Nothing Else Matters. Both songs are among each respective bands most successful and I'm ok with skipping both of them at this point.

There were a lot of 'black albums' around that time. A lot of bands saw the writing on the wall and were trying to streamline their sounds for a new audience:
Megadeth - Countdown, Testament - The Ritual, Flotsam & Jetsam - Cuatro, Sacred Reich - Independent, Fates Warning - Parallels, Anthrax - Sound Of White Noise, Exodus - Force of Habit, Sepultura - Chaos A.D....
Also, Silent Lucidity is awesome. To me, it's no different than London from this album (as far as feel and style, go). It's a little more slick and polished, but they also had a bigger budget.

Silent Lucidity isn't bad but saying it's "no different" from London's kind of a cope, that song is way better.
As far as black albums being concerned, I would not put Parallels in that company tbqh, it was still a prog metal album more or less. It didn't completely gut everything good about the band from them.

I love Silent Lucidity, Nothing Else Matters, Return to Serenity, Wading Through the Darkness, Eye to Eye, Hy Pro Glo, Good Day to Die and Slave New World…black album songs or not. I won’t say I love Independent but I also haven’t listened to it that much.

Honestly Megadeth probably had the best “black album”, Dave really knew how to write some killer fucking songs back in the day even when trying to keep up with Metallica’s popularity. Countdown rules. Being able to write a catchy chorus with *that* voice is seriously impressive imo

Countdown is actually one of my least favorite Black Albums, but I know I'm in the minority on that one
Sweating Bullets is legit one of the worst songs that any of the Big 4 bands ever released

HELLO ME

He has a unique voice and it suits his music fine. I’d rather have the odd Dave Mustaine or Tim Armstrong than have whole labels of rock singers that sounded the same like we’d see in the following decade

Very true. Tbh I’m not really shitting on Dave at all, at least not his vocals. I think they’re perfect for Rust and it’s always been one of my favorite metal records even after all this time

Except Dawn Patrol that “song” can kick rocks

Yeah, Dave is definitely a solid example of a vocal style being appropriate for a given band, while not being "technically" good. Rust in Peace is a stone cold 5/5 classic for me, and the vox have never had any negative impact on that score

"London" is the better song, but it is still in the same category as "Silent Lucidity".
To me, Black Album isn't synonymous with 'bad' or 'gutted' releases. "Cuatro" is still my favorite Flotsam release, so is The Ritual, the actual black album is Top 5 Metallica, and Sacred Reich's "Independent" isn't great but it's one of the better ones in their discography. So, I include "Parallels" even if Empire was probably more their influence than the actual black album.
Countdown is actually one of my least favorite Black Albums, too.

London isn't even close to the same vibe as Silent Lucidity, sorry. It's not a song I particularly enjoy that much, but there have been times when it hits *just right* and I well up because I have a daughter and blah blah.
It's one of the few songs that has a certain magic to it, kind of like "Tonight, Tonight".
And yeah, this album is basically right there with Mindcrime, but "basically" because of the ever-so-slightly-less-than-10/10 tracks is what seperates a great album from the fuckin' GOAT.
And Empire - despite being the most commercial I actually think it's one of the growers for true metal dudes. There's way more depth to it than it seems at the start, especially with songs like Della Brown and Anybody Listening?.

Fuckin A, top 10 ryche tracks as far as I’m concerned. Della is so fucking insanely underrated
Titan I really enjoy our mutual love for at least EP-Promised Land Queensryche. They were the best metal band on the planet during that era and I will say that shit with my chest
