"I kinda hate how every instrument here is competing for the same headspace. It feels claustrophobic where Nightside sounded expansive. Anyone else hear that?"

I feel exactly the same way Seven. It makes this one a little too monotonous for my taste. It's my least fave Emperor even.

Nightside sounded like it was recorded underwater. I get its BM and all that, but this sounds so much better

Different black metal albums, and both a hard 5 in my book, but this one was/is so influential and ahead of its time that I think it has the edge. Production suits this album very nice imho

I think the same could be said for Nightside though tbh. But I do agree with your premise Frost bro.

I'm going Nightside overall even though Filo has the best song in "Jesus Tod"

yeah this is incredible lol. maybe better than nightside but i appreciate them both for different reasons. nightside does have that classic icy bm feel but this is so much more grand and full. i do slightly prefer the production here but would it kill either album to have a mix with vocals pumped up a bit lol

Agreed, but I would add this work was way ahead of its time, it's visionary masterpiece. This album walked next to Ved Buens Ende so black metal could evolve beyond the limits it had back then.

agreed for sure. it's so cohesive back to front with the epic opener and beautiful closer. after a few more spins i think i prefer it to nightside by a touch but i think i should just do the right thing and 5 them both lol
