not complaining about them either...very view bands from the US strike my interest...are there anybands like Nightwish in the US?
There's a really cool power metal band from Quebec (ok, not the US, but close enough) called Forgotten Tales that has female vocalist. She doesn't sound a lot like Tarja, but she's still an amazing singer.

Check 'em out.

but i wish that they would write their songs in their native language...i know Nightwish has a few...but yeah...i think they'd sound cooler in their language not ours

Eh, English is more marketable. It's spoke, whether as a first or second language, all around the world, and people like to be able to follow the plot, so to say. Plus it's ALOT easier to sing along when you know what they're saying...I'm not necessarily saying I agree with it, but I can definetly understand why alot of bands sing in English. Plus, I guess it would be kinda exotic for people who's first language isn't English to sing in it.

true...but some bands don't even write one or two songs in their own language...i don't know...that just seems like they've sold out in some odd way IMO

I've often wondered about why so many bands sing in English when they don't neccesarily speak it as their original language. Me being the defeatist American that I am, I've always assumed that it's because the brittle American music industry that defines success for so many groups won't accept music that isn't in English, and so it forces the European groups to speak English just to earn their money. But now that Iai said that it's just a more musical language, perhaps I would agree. My girlfriend, for instance(who seems to be getting an unusual amount of airplay in this thread...hmm....) loves Japanese rock, but to me, the Japanese love of the Western style of singing and making pop and rock music doesn't sit comfortably at all with the way their language is constructed. German is similar to English in structure, but the guttural quotient is increased by a lot...I don't know, maybe I'm biased because English is my own language, but I think that what Iai said has validity.

But Swedish and Dutch seem ok....that hidden track at the end of Opeth's song "By the Pain I See In Others" for instance is in Swedish, yes? Not to turn this into an Opeth discussion, but that song is beautiful, in its own language. Is it possible that desire for commercial success Stateside is an important factor?

Yeah...I've always been curious exactly HOW heavy a hand he has in the music. For example, does he simply write the structure of the songs, lyrics and basic melody, and the rest of the band fills in their own interpretations, or does he write out every single note and just hand out a bunch of sheet music?

As for the current discussion...I also think that English is a pretty diverse language, being that it has both a Romantic and a Germanic background. You can yell "FUCK!!!" and sound really brutal and masculine, and you can also whisper "love," or "sunshine" and sound feminine.

Note: I'm not (or, at least trying not) to be sexist and implying that either of these distinctions is one of the genders, but rather the masculine and feminine sides of the human mind.

That said, "Sensafine" is probably my favorite Lacuna Coil song, and I love it when bands do sing in other languages.

According to the liner notes of "Once" all the music is written by him, and all the orchestral arrangements come from somebody that's not really in the band...too lazy to see what his actual name is. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't presume to write the guitar parts, either...he probably just feeds the rest of the band chords and the two guitarists fiddle with that. He probably also writes the vocal melodies, as that's not really a thing the singer needs to have control over, especially one as trained and thus presumably musically-fluent as Tarja: with her, he could probably just give her some sheet music for her to learn the melody.
Two guitarists?
I meant the bass player and the normal electric player. Sorry about the confusion, I know that Nightwish only has one electric guitar player.

Well, they pretty much ALL are professional musicians, and I wouldn't put it past them to be able to just sight-read all of the music, but I'd like to think that the rest of the band are at least SOMETHING other than really good readers.

Here's a huge bump, somewhat, but I just picked this up and I must say it's a fucking brilliant album.

I particularly like the choir arrangements done, especially on "I Wish I Had An Angel" and "Ghost Love Score". In fact, "Ghost Love Score" may be one of the best songs ever written, it's got everything...it's become one of my favorites to say the least

I adore this album. For about a month it was the only album that remained in my cd player.

I remember when i first put this album on, and was hit with the terrific song that was "Dark Chest Of Wonders" i just thought...holy crap, this is freaking amazing.

Then I listened to the album all the way through, and thought that there wasnt a bad song...each song has its own special part that makes it amazing...from the epicness of Ghost Love Score to the heaviness of Romanticide...its just amazing

Props to the reviewer too

I went to Nightwishs website and listened to a couple songs and read some lyrics. I thought musicly they are over dramatic but definatly talented. Lyricly though, they reek of religion. The lyrics couldn't be more christian. At least I thought.

References to

Virgin mary

Our creator

God

Etc,

I personally hate music that reeks of religion, if Nightwish didn't have these lyrics I would look into them more.

PS, I'm not a satanist or anything, just hate organized religion.

Na, I don't think Nightwish has that much to do with religion...

They're more based in fantasy type stuff, I believe. I'm not a lyrics expert.

I'm not against positve messages in music, art, or anything for that matter. There has to be a balance. I listen to mostly stuff with darker lyrics, but I also balance it out with positve stuff.

Shattered Future: I'm not a lyrics expert either but I sure know when something makes explict references to biblical themes/figures theres something to it.

Here I'm going to cut and paste some lyrics from nightwishs site, to prove my point.

This was in Tarja's bio. " Then I went to Sibelius Academy to study church music."

"For one moment of love

I wish I had your angel

Your Virgin Mary undone" Religious reference 1.

"13th disciple who betrayed me for nothing!" Same song yet another religious reference.

" Behold this fair creation of God" Point proven.

" An angel by my side

But no Christ to end this war" I could list more.

Lyrics from, www.nightwish.com from the "Once" album.

Eliminator: Good is all realtive. You might find religion "good". I hate it and have many person reasons against it. Though this is a CD review forum not religion.
