Yeah this is really good. I’ve always preferred Troy’s vocals the most out of everyone in the band. I don’t think he’s the best singer by any means but I don’t think there is anyone else out there that sounds like him and I don’t think he as ever sounded better than he does on this record.

I'm sorry bro

Bill has written most of mastodon’s stuff for multiple albums. I, too, was worried that Brent was the missing link and while I do appreciate his voice on recordings, Johnston is more than capable of filling the void on guitar. Dude has a similar style. I’m of the mind that Mastodon hasn’t written a bad album, so I’m sure I’ll like this. Will it measure up to classics like Leviathan and CTS? Doubtful. But who cares? It will still rule.

Nostalgia plays a big part on older records. This is strong as shit and if it came out 15 years ago it would prob be just as highly regarded tbh

Really interesting perspective in this review.

I agree about Crack the Skye being a high point but my impressions diverge with Hushed and Grim. I really liked the diversity on the album. Ironically, that goes against the "Brent volatility" theory a bit. I will admit, Hushed and Grim didn't create a great first impression and it took me several spins to unlock but eventually has become one of my favorite Mastodon albums.

This one seems more immediate so I'm curious to see how it evolves once I become more familiar with it's depth.

Regardless of whether he was the missing link in the band sound, Dirty B Hinds will be deeply missed. I have a signature Bent Hinds Orange Terror and I've always loved his brilliantly chaotic playing. Not crying at all as I write this sentence.
