I dont know if I would say they're foundational but they are definitely the black metal band that popularized symphonic black metal. People might say emperor but I think they're totally different bands and emperor isnt really THAT symphonic

i consider enthrone darkness triumphant essential listening if you are interested in black metal. its the platonic ideal of a symphonic black metal album.
