Spot on with the first/last half split. The first four tracks were bangers and then it kind of simmered down. Still a great listen, and agreed it's insane he recorded vocals a day before surgery.

Good album but the 3.9 avg is kinda crazy. I get it, I really do… but the context of the album’s release doesn’t make me like it any more.
I think you’re spot on in saying that it’s the best ATG record since their reformation, but it’s not anywhere near something like Slaughter of the Soul.

RIP tho obviously. Recoding vocals in his condition is serious king shit. I really wish I had the chance to catch these guys live

the context is unstrippable, it’s intertwined in the performance. knowing the story adds to it. you can’t really separate it, at least for me. music is so personal so it’s easy to understand why it is influencing people.

I have yet to jam this but it's probably worth noting this is Anders Bjorler's return to the band since he was absent on the last two releases.

@futures
I haven’t read any of the lyrics but for me that’s the place to have that kind of thing matter… to me most of these tracks don’t sound any more somber than the rest of their shit.
But I’ll admit, that’s on me for not knowing most of the lyrics before rating it. But I can’t really imagine them being strong enough for me to like it any more than I already do.
Great swansong for the band. Truly the end of an era.

Tha Riffz are tasty
Definitely not toooo much more than a riff salad but alas, the salad is vibrant and exciting and has balls. Not that uh, that's what I usually like in a salad.

wildcard i more so meant his literal vocal performance which as you noted was the day before he got his surgery. so his vocals sound distinct as a direct result of his cancer he was fighting. hard not to think of that when listening. so to me it's understandable there is a stronger connection than just a sad untimely death because it is baked into his performance.

It 100% is and it is evident just in the way the vocals are performed here. You can clearly tell he was going through it.

Oh for sure. I think that they lack some bite in a few spots but, I mean, completely understandable. Seriously, going in to record literally a day before a life altering surgery is one of the most insane things I’ve ever heard. That’s some real fucking dedication.

really dig this! definitely the most slaughter of the soul-y reunion album. love how they brought back a lot more aggressive chugs and grooves. really nice solos as well. just a bit more urgency. the darker and eerie atmosphere is of course fitting. very solid package overall.
closing stretch from the unfathomable until the closer is really good. unfathomable is probably my favorite song here, those riffs are punishing. phantom gospel rips and the instrumental is a really nice lead in to black hole emission which is a fitting closer. really dig tomb of heaven too.
two listens and i want to go back for more! really happy this lived up to my hopes. definitely the best reunion album. rip tompa.

Hawks, I hear a very inspired performance and yes I've read he did the vocals in one take the day before his surgery. But I disagree with "going through it" as this is his best performance since SotS.
