While I loved Themata, and it would be very cool to see them do another song like "Scarabs", they've predominantly been a very melodic band with cool riffs and powerful choruses, and this album gives me exactly that. I really don't see the complaint here.
Sure, it's a more streamlined album than Sound Awake, but not by much honestly. "Set Fire to the Hive" is the only song there that it's reminiscent of earlier Karnivool. Asymmetry did try to deviate from the formula of the previous album, with more syncopated rhythms and odd song structures, but it turned out to be not as memorable. It was an obvious choice to take things relatively safe with this one, and I think the songwriting was the focus here and they succeeded ten fold.

Really nice songs but I think as an album it's a bit too long-winded. Too many songs that just float about a bit, but that is a recurring complaint about this band for me. Production is once again stellar, although a bit too compressed imo.

Agreed 100%
I think this might be the reason I like to listen to side A, pause and then listen to side B. It's also the reason why I like Karnivool, but never fell in love with them

I always like their songs when they come through on Shuffle but indeed, a full album sit-through is usually too much

this is my first experience with karnivool and i adore it, it's so dynamic, knowing exactly when to be subtle and intense and it really heightens every peak this album has. i'm not hearing some of the criticisms people have - i don't think it's frontloaded at all, and i don't even find it too long winded, it keeps me gripped throughout. the structure is logical enough to make sense but unpredictable enough to subvert your expectations.
guess i gotta check out the rest of their discog now

Thinking there's a hard quality drop off after All It Takes gotta be one of the most unfounded and diarrhea takes I've seen around here.
Last 3 tracks are some of the best offerings here. Remote breaks up a lot of the sameyness and is a refreshing step away from the album's comfort zone. Opal was the standout single for largely the same reason and also just rules, closer is fantastic and easily one of the best tracks.
Calling Conversations a weak link on the album also insane, another of the best bois.
"The Ocean but good" sure takes the cake though. Everyone's having ears privileges are being revoked.

I'm not connecting with Opal that much, which is basically the only reason I'm not 5'ing this at this point. Maybe it'll come.
Conversations is such a vibe, when that sick bass groove kicks in, hnnnng

More so than being frontloaded (I had the impression that the quality dropped of a bit in the second half, though the closer is on par with the first batch of tracks; perhaps not a major drop in quality, but a slight downturn mayhaps), and more so than its apparent lack of stylistic variation, for me at least, there is a lack of musical risk being taken by the band here; had hoped for a less accessible, by-the-numbers approach to their by now well-worn prog-rock sound and compositional approach.

This I agree with and why I'm sitting at a 4 but probably dip a lil lower than that even.
Did the singles too many times and they're mostly bangers but super straightforward and kind of by the numbers for these guys.
I blame everyone's piss poor reception of Asymmetry which actually rules.

Listening now and even though I haven't heard these guys before, I feel like I've heard this all before several times over. Not necessarily bad since I love this early-mid 2000s alt sound, but we'll see how the rest of the album goes down.

Asymmetry is a grower album that never grew on me. "We Are" is top 5 Karnivool though. Amazing amazing song.

I don't rly think anything on his album touches New Day or the last 2 on Sound Awake

Asymmetry never grew much on me either. May slightly prefer this latest releases to it. In any case, Sound Awake remains this band's peak for me.

"Love the end of Opal"
There's a guitar motif earlier, but can hear it clearly at the 4:51 min mark which reminds me a lot of the theme to Stranger Things.

yall got me so excited for this and ive liked everything i heard by this band
this was...okay. i feel like im just not a huge fan of the tool-esque prog, it feels too tepid for me. tried one of the Rishloo albums recently and had a similar experience. some really cool highs but i feel like im just waiting for something to happen more often than not.
i'll give this another go doe. Drones was amazing and Conversations was the definite highlight. last 3 were good too! how can you not smile at the outro solo in Salva

i gotta say the lyrics on this one deserve mention - they have such a poetic way of creating a visual of what they're saying and the colourful word choices don't at all obfuscate the message
i'm so deeply impressed
