I guess in reality I sort of agree with you. It’s not in the high fours but I still enjoyed pretty much the entire thing.
And the way it’s produced is top notch.

well well well...this was a very, very... okay listen. looks like they've settled for staying true to the sound of their most iconic album, a classic veteran metal band move to ensure respectable mediocrity. lots of skill but no passion.

"Mayhem are like the Venom of the Norwegian black metal scene, they pale in comparison to their contemporaries, their classic albums are kinda overrated and most of the hype stems from the band's image/controversy as opposed to the music itself."
ordo ad chao is the best black metal album so thats definitely not true.

> Mayhem are like the Venom of the Norwegian black metal scene, they pale in comparison to their contemporaries, their classic albums are kinda overrated and most of the hype stems from the band's image/controversy as opposed to the music itself. I'd rather just listen to Enslaved or Emperor.
I think there’s some truth to that tbh, even though the music actually is quality for the most part, arguably overshadowed by their rep and ironically underrated, the cultural hype surrounding Mayhem does much more of the work of maintaining popularity than it does/did for Burzum or Darkthrone imo. De Mysteriis rules, but it’s also pretty late to the game by 1994, and yeah there’s Deathcrush, but it isn’t all that great. Most of the influence comes from Euronymous, Dead, and their live performances at the time, not their published music. I’m a fan of their later albums too, but then we’re in a different context and by that point they’re already running off reputation, half their most controversial members are dead or imprisoned.

Just jammed and I don't think it is (sorry). Cool stylistic concept, okay idea for the production, but the two don't come together.

I feel like the clean production worked well here. It’s exactly the same as they sound live.
