Renegades is a brilliant album and this is also hella fun. Big and epic with interesting carry over of the Japanese influenced piano violins and flutes which was a feature on Renegades. It’s got personality and that’s instantly better than a lot of faceless metal going around. Actually not that different from new Amorphis and latest Wintersun and even latest Soilwork.

Nah bro, Renegades is literally one of the worst albums I've ever heard lol. This is fun though and the rest of their discog is amazing.

i think my fav 'fun' album from them is erdentempel - there's arguably more goofy shit there than any of the last few albums but it felt more self-aware and less 'trying to be serious'. these last few albums seem to have taken that stance of trying to reach for something bigger and more philosophical but it stumbles at every hurdle. every album since armageddon has sadly suffered from this.

yeah it's a really fun time - sagas is obviously their finest work but i honestly preferred erdentempel to rekreatur because rekreatur just felt like sagas-lite.

I can understand that for sure. Rekreatur and Erdentempel are about on the same level for me. Got them both at 4.3 lol. But yeah, Sagas is in the convo for best folk metal album ever made.

it's up there. it's not a perfect record but if we're talking about that kind of epic, cinematic folk metal sagas is 100% an essential staple. a lot of newer surface level metal heads who end up engrossed in the likes of powerwolf and sabaton would have their minds fucking blown at what equilibrium were doing 15 years before those two bands got popular.

Sagas, and early Equilibrium in general, is impressive simply for the fact that they actually manage to pull off the epic symphonic folk metal sound without it sounding like a huge mess. So many of those “symphonic metal” projects are absolute garbage. Oddly enough, the more streamlined direction they’re going in now is where they’re screwing up.

They’re actually very similar so can’t fathom this

Except this is boring and Renegades was somewhat interesting

Opposite for me. Renegades is completely flacid imo whereas I at least dig the folk parts here. Thats just me though lol.
|

Are they still a metalcore/folk version of Five finger death punch?

Yes lmao.

It's a shame my introduction to them was Erdentempel, which was also their last truly good album. Dom R Crey is a good guitarist as Nothgard show, but his melodeath influence just didn't mesh well with Equilibrium. I think this was his last album with them before going back to focus on Nothgard which benefits everyone. Only 3 members left in Equilibrium though - the new vocalist Fabian Getto, founding guitarist René Berthiaume, and drummer Tuval Refaeli who's been there since 2010. So they're clinging onto life right now. The new members have to be able to bring the right ideas to the table so they can turn things around on the next album, though.

Then it's probably an auto 1 lmao. Last song I heard from them was hilarious,

Scuro likes Renegades and hawks like this so I’m vindicated with both albums
