i mean the sound here is basically textbook “in the box” production. pretty much all amp sims and DSP in a DAW. while all that tech has democratized making “professional” sounding music on your own, it really has homogenized production sounds. its like CGI vs on location shooting. you can just tell it isn’t real noise going through mics.

Nah, the drums do not sound professional at all. To me the 'In the box' sound applies to alt rock / metalcore bands sampling everything on a drum kit, putting synths and 10 billion backing vocals on their tracks. This just sounds lazy. You can do so much more to make a drum machine sound at least a bit human.

Laziness is most definitely not the word that I associate with this band lol. Like I said, they push genre boundaries with the best of them. I just can't comprehend that take tbh lol.

Maybe they have no time left for the drums after they're done pushing genre boundaries then haha. Or they are just completely clueless about drum production, also possible since they are only a two-piece.

drum machines can either enhance an intended aesthetic (think Godflesh or the work which transforms god) or just often end up trying to mimic what a real drummer would do in a much more inferior, much less textured way.

yeah the only way a drum machine works is if the point is to sound like a drum machine.

Love the production on this personally, great mix of surgical and wonk when the track calls for it. Every track is really distinct and creative so I'm stoked I can hear everything that's going on so clearly

Is there another Veilburner album that I can start with that has a different vocal style, or are they all like this? I'm not gonna rate this low just for that because the riffs were sick, but I didn't finish the album because of the vocals. They're just... all over the place. Definitely not my cup o' tea.
