"If language was strictly denotative then this would be the case, but every spoken language has it's own unique, aesthetic beauty found within it's articulation that can be perceived even without translation."

I'm not even sure what the argument is on this language thing, but this is pretty much my thoughts. Different languages have different cadences and structure and I think she does a great job harnessing them, in whatever capacity, and making it work for her purposes here. Maybe I'm not online enough but I'm not seeing where her English is being given more credence than any other language.

"Music enjoyers of any stripe should be able to recognize this as an impressive piece of art"

The odd moments with the male vocals are terrible though. [2]

The male vocals on 'Porcelana' were jarring at first, but now I quite love them tbh lol

Some people just like to be contrarians. It is what it is.

Even if you don't connect to the music emotionally, you still gotta respect the craftsmanship and care that was put into this project.

I've read many comments about the album being "pretentious". I get the idea behind this criticism - it is a very artsy album, there is no randomness, no improvisation. It's extremely precise. In this regard, it's quite similar to artists like Kate Bush or Björk. It is possible to simply enjoy the music for what it is - stunning, beautiful, melodic. But it's the deeper layers that intrigue me the most. There are so many great compositional and productional details in these songs. It's an album that really rewards exploration.

Overhyped album that tries to sound innovative, but there is nothing here that Björk didn’t already do decades ago, just to name one artist who truly pushed boundaries. The production is undeniably pristine, every sound perfectly sculpted, every beat layered with intention. But that polish ends up working against the music it feels more like an art installation than an album meant to be lived with. The constant code-switching between Spanish, English, and random bits of French or Portuguese doesn’t add depth; it feels like a fashion statement. It’s art-school cosmopolitanism: impressive on paper, hollow in feeling. Her voice is still amazing though.

Is the album's sound really seeking innovation though? And with that being said, is an album bad because it lacks innovation? The whole online frenzy on whether or not this classifies as "classical" is the only thing that's bothering me; this isn't any modern masterpiece on classical music but rather a pop record with obvious orchestral and classical elements and influences (very much so inspired by Björk, as she's been mentioned as an influence) and her take on it is, at the very least, engaging as a listener. This album never really hit me as an innovative piece of art per se, but a well-crafted, produced and sung record it is—among the best of the year with ease.

The argument over how the production is pristine to the point of feeling artificial is one that is worthy of the discussion; while it does slightly bother me when it comes up in very straightforward, generic ballads (e.g. 'Sauvignon Blanc'), the production is, personally, so well-engineered and gorgeous that there's a lot of replay value to it. But I can see how it can seem off-putting to many.

Yeah I literally thought the strings were synths due to how they were processed. Not a fan of that, but I can see how one can think how the super tight sound is nice and fits the record.

I don't think the production ever feels artificial. If the primary instrumentation used here were anything were anything other than a literal symphony, this wouldnt even be a conversation. Rosalia has used glitch pop as seasoning on all of her albums except her debut. This isnt meant to sound live, its opera"tic", adjacent, inspired by. This is a pop album and is produced like a pop album.

This is produced like an electropop / hip-hop album. Which is fine, but I don't like it. Pop can also be made with organic sounding instruments.

electropop/hip-hop/pop are all produced the same these days. organic sounding production is a choice and this isn't going for that. I just don't think it sounds "artificial" is all.

mf said "shit, bjork did this sound" and acted like that alone is not a massive endorsement on how creative and special that is, plus she worked with her for Berghain lmao

"lyrics on la yugular are dreadful I envy anyone who doesn't speak spanish"

I agree tho i do think lyrics have never been so much her strong suit, everything from "Motomami" onwards is pretty hit or miss lyrically IMO, I think she was at least a more interesting lyricist back in the "El Mal Querer" days.
