Hot take I guess, but I loved Triumph and Disaster. Not as much as Departure Songs, to be clear, but Beautiful Collapse goes extremely hard.

Also, Last Dive of David Shaw might be the most heartbreaking post-rock song of all time

"Like you even said you love it even though it’s uninteresting musically I was like damn haha"
i think i should clarify what i meant because i certainly didn't mean it as a slight against DS which is an album i really love;
we lost the sea, just as a band, don't play post-rock with any differentiating factors or in my view much flair - it's pretty plain and clear cut. additionally i just don't think melodically they have much going on.
DS was a real anomaly because despite these (in my view) shortcomings, the emotional depth of the album really came through and filled in all the gaps. you may not be consciously aware of the themes behind the songs but that's kind of the point - they used really emotive stories to tell an emotional narrative that transcended the album. whether you're conscious of it or not, the themes behind the album absolutely made the album what it is. they struck gold and it's no doubt a very heartfelt album that i really love to this day.
i've found their material after this, particularly this album, unable to fill those gaps. triumph and disaster in some ways is underappreciated - i really admired a lot of its choices musically to try and steer away from DS and sometimes it was really successful. it just didn't hold that momentum the whole way through imo.
in no way did i want my compliments for DS to seem like a slight because it wasn't. there's so many times in history where bands that to all intents and purposes aren't instrumentally amazing but strike gold with inspiration in the moment and make masterpieces - DS is 100% one of those albums and i adore it for that. they've just not been able to grab me since and i think the reason i'm so disappointed is *because* i love DS so much.
maybe my expectations are out of whack? who knows - just expressing my feelings. if y'all are getting more out of this album than me that's awesome and i'm happy for ya.

I hear ya man. I feel like I’m one of the view users who are very vocal about their love for post rock and WLTS I feel is exceptional as a whole lol

that's cool - i really admire departure songs and it's one of the post-rock albums i'd always recommend to people from the 2010s. it's very close to a 5 for me and it's frankly worthy of it. it was the perfect way not only to comemorate their late vocalist but to also move forward as a band - sadly nothing after it grabbed me, but it clearly has its admirers and that's cool. i don't like to piss on parades.
post-rock was a big part of my own musical development and no doubt departure songs was among my later admirations. hell my fav album of all time is a post-rock album (jakob - solace).

Ditto, last track is pretty not good and drags the whole album down. This is a solid 4 without it for me.
Crazy cause Challenger Part 1 is just as long but like one million times better, can hardly believe it's the same band.

Knda on the fence about the quality of the last track, but I do enjoy listening to it and that's always the best starting point

Omg i had no idea about this

We lost the bitch ass sea back at it again. Idk man, these guys are massively overrated on here imo. Very run of the mill post rock stuff

This is what happens when you semi-accidentally make one of the greatest albums of all time, end up in its shadow forever.

Yeah, this album is really really solid.
