not feeling the cleans at all

band has kind of a cool sound, but its so maximalist like 95% of the time that it all just goes in one ear and out the other tbh

Wow I love this. Definitely in my top 3 with Spiritbox and Callous Daoboys.

Somewhere between a 3.5-4 for me, I have a hard time placing this band bc they are a very easy listen for me, everything clicks and is enjoyable, but it all feels kind of safe and predictable at the same time? I've been fb friends w/ Kyle since before the band and he is a great dude and vocalist (even better guitar player ironically, which he does not do at all in this band) and he sounds great on this, love the clean parts and his scrims sound solid.
It just doesn't quite have that spice for me, nothing to make it particularly stand out or keep me coming back, felt pretty similar about the last one too but this one edges it out a bit I think, there are a few extra nice moments here, last track is pretty nuts. Carstairs guitar playing is always great too I can't knock anything about how he riffs, this just doesn't quite make it into my pantheon of current fav metal acts frustratingly.

This is not at all my style of metal (I actually think Undying Light was the only one I liked by these guys, lol) but I thought this was pretty intuitive to follow. I liked the atmospheric/synthy/keyboard-driven sections the most. I dig the vocalist, too, gives the music a very genuine feel; that recent video where he went over the keys and synths for this album was great.
|
| |
Odd that that would be the one you prefer, because I came here to ask if folks agree that Undying Light was a fluke.
I looooved Flesh Prevails and Dreamless, but that one was so disappointingly sour. I didn’t even pay attention to their last one because of it and now that I’m looking at it I suppose that was an error. Excited that I have TWO fresh (to me) Fallujah records to enjoy now.

I think it was that all their albums before had their moments, but I'm very picky with technical metal, and none of them really connected. In contrast, I actually liked UL's cavernous atmosphere and restrained sound. But this one finally did it for me as far as their "technical" stuff goes. Empyrean didn't connect for me (I may have to listen to it again), but I'm pretty sure it's seen as a return to form.

First half is mostly “oh this is nice and pleasant” but nothing wowed me. But then Step, Architect, and t/t all rip. Enjoyed the back half except parasitic dream is whatever
|
| |
I definitely am finding Parastic Dream to be a super meh, why even bother, sort of track. But same, the back half is great besides that.

Definitely one of my favorite releases of the year so far.
I will say I enjoyed the 3 singles more than most of the remaining tracks from the album so I am feeling a *little* disappointed.
The last track though is great and the outro especially is pure chills for a solid 1 - 2 minutes.
This will probably get some flak but I feel like some of the tech death riffs these guys bring are pushing the genre forward. I know as a shitty guitarist myself, I find some parts of this to be pretty inspiring.
Like I listen to the first few minutes of Step Through the Portal and Breathe, and I’m just in awe frankly.

"These guys have that twinkly djent-ish production and mindless chugs that will rub me the wrong way 10 times out of 10."
Yup, they've always given me Born of Osiris vibes. Fallujah guitarist filling in as guitarist for BoO kinda makes that connection stronger for me lol. Band has a lot of syncopated rhythms. Much more than the average tech death band. It's borderline djent adjacent, imo.

There is quite literally nothing "djent" about this at all.

is djent not just a guitar tone? dont tell me "syncopated rhythms" in metal equals djent now....

Definitely okay listening to this.

If it's not djent then it's syncopated technical death metal, but thats a bit of mouthful, isn't it? The Zenith Passage I find similar in this regard. The syncopation has to be acknowledged because tech death bands rarely use it as heavily as these bands do. It's one of the things that make them standout the most, and it's something that really draws me to them, too.
