Yeah The Satanist is great and the next one was a diminishing return and everything after that has been pretty poo. Then I looked at the title of this alone and was literally like "yeah I'm not listening to that"
Just watched through Righteous Gemstones tho and "O Father, O Satan, O Sun" popping up in S2E8 credits was very fuckin cool.

Cheers row, sunny, garas- appreciate you all
Definitely a feeling of coasting on this record, but the amped up corniness doesn’t do it any favours. And that’s what’s mad- I don’t doubt that it’s completely earnest, which somehow makes the effect even worse
@tsunami very interested to know how it’s possible to NOT notice the lyrics here…
@jizzy I Loved You At Your Darkest was definitely weaker than Satanist but still a decent album imo, think it gets unfairly maligned in the shadow of its predecessor

yeah, with lyrics this shitty and with a clearly legible vocal, how do you not notice?
"it is fatiguing as you describe, but who's putting on a whole ass BDM album and just listening without expecting to be worn down?"
being 'worn down' due to a tiresome set of uninspiring tropes and a lack of creative intrigue resulting in boredom, isn't akin to fatigue from suffocating relentlessness, homogeneity or dissonance (all can be good things, depending). It's unlikely this will be a difficult listen for anyone with even a passing interest in black and / or death metal, so presumably this is not what you mean by "fatiguing"

Well said. Yeah nothing remotely punishing about this from a sonic point of view, it’s a patience tester based purely on the tired and cheesy content

Yeah I would agree with this, there's a few choice tracks in particular off of that one I can still go back to, it just definitely felt like the start of an exponentially increasing decline especially at this point looking back

This album sounds like they tried to make The Satanist 2 but so much of this just pales in comparison. It seriously sounds like a cheap imitation of that album. Even the messaging, which I know--it's Nergal it'll always be about this shit, is just microwaved sentiments delivered more succinctly on The Satanist.
I dunno I'm listening to The Satanist now and I consider it the band's statement piece. It's so charred black in spots but is so listenable on a general level (if you're a metal fan that is) that it seems to come from a place of genuine artistry whereas every album following in its wake has been basic mimicry. Shit makes me sad. Supremely talented band with not a whole lot left to say.

@pump it's a particular manifestation of the spectrum I just dgaf about words. maybe because I can't write lyrics, or vice versa I can't write lyrics because I've never clocked them.
I appreciate good ones when I'm randomly able to discern them, but bad ones just don't matter to me 1 bit. maybe it's from growing up in the nu metal era when lyrics were all completely awful. i quote darwin's waiting room to my dog every day when he picks up a toy: 'you wanna fuck around? you wanna play?'
@demon I drum in a bdm band with 12minute blast epics, but I rarely if ever put that shit on, it's rarely interesting enough to be worth the non-dynamic onslaught. and it rarely sounds sonically good. gimme some mass worship 10x over any of this kvlt stuff. demigod and zos kia cultus rip but they came out when my brain was soft and receptive; idk if they'd stick if they came out today
