Ironically on one of their least blasphemous releases.

Album has grown on me a little, but this is still a fairly typical 3.0/5 to me. I don't think I'll love it much more than that. Maybe a 3.5/5 at a push.

this has more hooks and melodies than a mid to late 80's hair metal album, drenched in cheddar, gotta love it boys

This is not a Ghost album, this is Forge's weird glam rock/modern pop pastiche with no good ideas.

For me I go Skeleta>Prequelle-Impera>Meliora>Infestissumam>Opus
I know it's a cop out to put Prequelle and Impera on even ground but I seriously can't choose between the two.

It’s like they stripped anything that made them unique and interesting and just went for a straightforward rip-off of my Mom’s record collection

"how is this any less of a Ghost album than the last two"
not that i don't think this is a ghost record, but the most pronounced change is a pretty subtle one - the thematic shift to more contemporary and insular themes lyrically is a pretty stark contrast to the societal and cultural commentary of prequelle and impera and i think the album feels a lot different because of it, and mostly suffers from the change.
i miss the multi-layered metaphors of 'witch image' and 'rats' and they really complimented the theatrics. ghost was very much a full package deal - everything played into one another. it now just feels a bit strange seeing and hearing so much theatrical fluff paired with songs about being afraid to tell your friend they're wrong about something. it just rings hollow and trite on a whole.
now i've had more time with this album i don't hate it per-se but it's really missing the sense of depth of prequelle. impera was more uneven but it had *wayyyy* higher highs than this album does so i forgave a lot of its blunders. i'm cool with ghost's musical direction, it's the lyrical and thematic side of this album that really lets it down and makes a lot of these songs seem like non-starters.

Okay I can kinda see that.
Idk for me I’m just glad this record has more heaters than Prequelle, felt similarly about Impera. Prequelle has some really great tracks, I’d add Miasma and Faith to Rats and Witch Image, but there were a few too many ballad type tracks and they didn’t always completely land with me. See the Light is great, but Pro Memoria is god awful and I barely even remember Life Eternal, and Helvetesfonster literally just feels like filler to get the album across the 40 min mark.
So thematically I for sure think both of those records are stronger but songwriting wins out here for the most part, still don’t like Cinotaph and Missilia Amori. Everything else ranges from good to fucking fire.

See the light is my favourite Ghost song! God that song rules, but agree Pro Memoria, life eternal, helvet etc dont register much for me.
I think Cenotaph is quite good actually, but agree Missila Amori is one of the weaker ones along with guiding lights.
Funnily enough satanized is probably my second least favourite even though its pretty classic Ghost sounding. I definietly don't mind it.

I rank the songs:
De Profundis Borealis Great
Marks of the Evil One Great
Peacefield Great
Umbra Great
Excelsis Great
Lachryma Good!
Cenotpah Decent!
Missilia Amori Not bad
Satanized Not bad
Guiding Lights Not the best

A+ - Lachryma, Umbra
A - De Profundis Borealis, Satanized
B - Marks of the Evil One, Excelsis, Guiding Lights
C - Peacefield
D - Cenotaph, Missilia Amori
And yeah See the Light is legit fucking incredible. I wish that song got more love. Prequelle, for me, is easily their worst record and it’s absolutely insane how uneven it is. It’s got a few of their best songs ever and a few of their absolute worst. I really think Pro Memoria is probably at the very bottom of the barrel. I’m pretty sick rn, I might run thru the discog and rank out all of their songs. Decent way to kill some time

i dunno, the lyrics made me pretty wary of see the light, being an obvious reference to the former bandmates that sued him. instrumentally it's great mind you.
totally disagree on prequelle, it's their best album for me and though it isn't super even it definitely has the higher highs (i like pro memoria - it's worth it for the last leg of the song after the chorus despite the chorus being extremely melodramatic). witch image imo is the band's best song to date - world class songwriting.
one thing i will say about this album is - on a whole - it's a very consistent work. even the worst song 'missilia amori' isn't an instant skip like 'twenties' was - i literally couldn't stand to even listen to it. made my skin crawl. i think what'll likely happen is i'll spin this album when i'm really in the mood for it and it'll click but it hasn't happened yet.
i think for the longest time i was into ghost for a different reason to everyone else. my musical upbringing (say between ages 7 to 10) was abba and def leppard so it really spoke to those influences and imparted a sense of nostalgia but in a really fresh way.
then i found summoning + moonsorrow + emperor + shape of despair and y'know, the rest is history.

Missilia Amori honestly a bop, hardly the worst here imo, that goes to one of the boring middle tracks.
