Noctourniquet is light years ahead of this, likely the last great thing we'll get from them

.....and people shat on the self titled album.

will read the rev tomorrow at break, but glad to see the high rating. i thought I'd rate it thereabouts, but after a few listens it's really wearing off fast. i expected the opposite tbh. def better than the self titled tho, no question

yeah, i dont get the hate for the self-titled and the love for this. self-titled is much better too

I think s/t took a lot of people by surprise, while this gets compared against it. I like both albums, but I do think that this one has better ideas.

Another thing I'm not sure it was a good decision is how they stuffed 18 tracks on this. There are some really good melodies and ideas on some sections that could have been developed more into full tracks and even split the thing into two releases.

“ Cheers Gonz, your review of the last one was really helpful when putting my thoughts together about this one. And I agree, I miss their fire, i mean, who doesn't, right?”
It’s appreciated man!

Totally agree with this. S/t is a littler stronger imo, but honestly this one is just more of the same only slightly weirder. It’s the Frances the mute version of the s/t in essence

I found this incredibly boring, which is the absolute worst thing a Mars Volta album can be

S/T rules and so does this. Both better than anything since Amp.

This is my first time listening to post hiatus TMV. Initially I was very disappointed but after a few more spins I think I see the vision, and the result is actually quite smooth and pretty, while still having a lot of groove and weirdness of their DNA... just much less in your face. I dig.

Finally listened to this. Within 10 seconds I liked it better than self titled. I agree, it could've used more of a climax but im keen to listen to it a few times. There was a lot going on and i think once I learn the flow of it I'll like it even more.

"yeah, i dont get the hate for the self-titled and the love for this. self-titled is much better too"
It just has really bland songs. It's not a good pop album which they wanted it to be, and its not a good mars volta album which is what everyone else wanted. And stylistically it's all over the place. After watching the documentary I'm convinced it was a cash grab to fund the trial for cedrics wife and shine as much light as possible on it.

To be honest, this kinda bores me. It is an ok listen, it does take more time for ideas to develop than S/T which was my main complain about that one. But this just has way less interesting ideas unfortunately....

It's a step in the right direction. If there had been an even bigger payoff after 35 minutes of meandering music it would've been great but I still enjoy it for what it is.
