I'm kinda surprised by that tbh Boney bro lol.

Great review. Needless to say, this is not my thing (but I'll say it anyway, apparently). I'm actually surprised it had the potential to be your thing.

Thanks bro!! I mean I love lofi indie folk stuff and his early stuff rules. This one is definitely not my cup of tea though as you can tell lol.

AWARD SEASON is ok but if he released that near-A Capella style across a whole 40 minute album I’d 1 the album.
4 minutes of that is just about tolerable, still a bit grating for me.

I can get this down to a 10 track album that's around a 4 and better than i,i -- but yeah the Gospel shit is a no for me.

This style just doesn't suit him at all imo. If he would've stuck with the formula from SABLE, it would be a very easy 4 at least.

Yeah I don't really know what made him decide not to pursue the sound of Sable completely, could have been on par with his best.

Prior to this, i,i was worst Bon Iver, but still a 4/5 for me. This is a noticeable step back after one spin

I hate ii but it's a daring masterpiece compared to this aural diaper

If he went with the sound of Sable for the entire album I’d be fine with it, but not if there was another track like Awards Season. That shit honestly sucks so hard.

I like Awards Season. It works within the context of Sable and the horns are a breath of fresh air.

almost like there's already a full album of the Sable sound and it's from nearly 20 years ago lol. fables so much better

I know For Emma and the self titled exist and obv are superior, but I don't think Sable is identical to those. I don't mind the risk taking with Fable, and I'm glad he finally seems happy, but I also do wish it had less to do with gospel folk-pop. Just my preference though.
Half the time I almost expected to hear JV burst into a chorus of "don't go cryin', to your momma, cuz you're on your own in the real world" 😂

Agreed with all of that Sowing bro.

Sable is kind of like Sufjan on Carrie and Lowell, harkening back to the more stripped back folksy indie style of his early albums while still very much being its own thing.

Also very much agree with that.

I still quite like the end of Fable, the last few songs
They sound a bit like an chillout mix of existing Bon Iver songs…but is that so bad?

“but I also do wish it had less to do with gospel folk-pop”
agreed

The whole gospel-pop-soul thing just isn't my bag at all and it just dominates 95% of the album. SABLE was just so good and this is just pure disappointment for me.
