I would take this over Mercury Revs Born Horses.
Both bands commit the cardinal sin of taking themselves too seriously. Credit where it’s due though Mercury Rev have some classics under their belt.
BCNR have absolutely nothing other than external low level hooplah

Maybe it's because I didn't have the strong connection to this band with Isaac that others did, but I found this rather charming and engaging throughout. The new vocalists do a wonderful job with taking up the reins and adding their own individual influences on this sound. Great record

if the second Friday in october has winds below 5 mph and the preceding week saw a gradual cooling of temperatures across a uniform radius of 50 miles, and howlong as the number of wooden mallards on mantelpieces maintains a ratio of 1.39 per 10 households within said radius, and at least 10 of these uniquely stationed (unrelated, unacquainted) wooden mallards have been fit with googly eyes and safe stick putty, then we can say with 100% confidence that the third Friday in October will bring to the same area a prevailing mood of muted but resolute optimism, accompanied by a statistically significant uptick in the sale of cinnamon-scented candles, vintage flannel, and artisanal preserves.

i think people are mad that this band isn’t making music specifically catered to their taste anymore and they express that through hyperbolic takes about it being way worse than it clearly is

and we're the "contrarians" for liking a different sound probably. was hoping the avg wouldn't be so much lower because this being my fav is prime for 5sposting to come back because obviously it means I am trying to be different

I think Colton has been hanging around some rather impressionable youngsters, because who are these “people” you speak of?
I know baseless assumptions is kinda your schtick, but man

i believe he means the rymers complaining that isaac is gone and downrating this to the point where someone on the outside will be flabbergasted that there are people who like this more than isaac era bc based on the averages afut should be the "objective" best

this is one of the highest rated albums of the year on rym. they have consistently had better taste on there than we have for years now

look it's fine. I'm not going to beat the contrarian allegations and that's something I just have to accept.

“this is one of the highest rated albums of the year on rym”
exactly, which doesn’t mean what you think it does
This was always gonna happen but the thread has taken a weird turn for sure. I preferred it when opinions weren’t based on what they thought someone else’s opinion or a “collective” opinion is, was, or should be. I smell projection in many of these instances. It’s an ugly look, especially when someone’s making bad faith arguments

colton the comment box was full of people chaining a comment about "estrogen" and "wokeness" and people keep going in the box to say "wokeness ruins everything". So, i guess a lot of BCNR fans are right-wing
also it's getting blown out by jane remover and skrillex in the ratings which will be very funny to see come next chart update

‘I would take this over Mercury Revs Born Horses’
Different ballpark but the backing for that Rev album is smooth, cinematic, a bit soundtrack’ish, its music that’s not trying to be too experimental/challenging.
The vocals are new age dippy drippy but that’s Donahue the last decade or two.
This is trying to be different and experimental and the vocals haven’t built up any good will so not for me. Surprised it’s worse music than with the suicidal Conor Oberst bloke but he had an ear for something clearly, because whatever impact the arrangements used to have has massively reduced.
