Enough with the Spirit slander man, that album is so lit it's mind-boggling y'all can't see/hear haha

Elite level review, bravo
It might be one of their more accessible records, really like it but definitely not my favorite at the moment

This is almost certainly gonna be sliding into third spot behind Alpha and Vile Lux. Idk if it has the (consistent) juice to usurp the latter. A return to form for sure tho

Feel like this is one of those bands where people never learn their lesson. This isn't a one listen - understand everything kinda album/band.

who are you suggesting has given it no more than one listen

Rating it a 2.5 the day it drops is crazy. Like, some albums you gotta let sit for days/weeks, but maybe that is just a me thing.

Lol Lil just say my name its much easier than talking shit like a 3 year old and "subtweeting". I've jammed this 4 times now...still a 2.5. If it grows then cool but for now it is what it is tbh. Idk why you care how others rate things.

one of those cases where I can see both sides - like, obviously I don't agree that this 2.5 material or that it's straightforward enough to fully process in a single listen, but its overall thrust is still immediate enough that that I can imagine being rubbed the wrong way by it on first pass and deciding that any time I sunk into familiarising myself with it further would be unlikely to offset my overall aversion. the band certainly put enough emphasis on visceral impact that I'd respect anyone going with their gut and calling it a day

And in the same vein, I completey understand why people ARE enamored by it. I get it. Its too straightforward to a detriment for me. This band's whole appeal to me was mixing the dark jazz parts with the batshit insane riffage. Now that the jazz elements are gone its like....yeah its riffs but what else does it bring to the table? For me, not much. And it is what it is. Everybody isn't gonna like everything, even a seasoned metalhead like myself. Its just not possible lol.

Yep both Johnny and Hawks sound about right for me. This would go up to a 3 at best but I was rather stone faced throughout my first listen that I might get more annoyed having to hear Rot Moderne again lol.
And I've never come across anything I need to let sit for more than one listen. My gut reaction on a first listen is where it sits 99% of the time with a deviation of a half star. Any crazy mismatched ratings have been me revisiting something I rated like in college.

I do think this band’s noir jazz appeal began and kinda ended at Vile Luxury. That one was well-thought out and “progressive”, it worked well atmospherically and had a continuous ebb and flow. The redux really brought this home, because the prod was superb. Alphaville was what it was and singular because it didn’t lean too hard into that side of their sound and brought harder riffs. I mean despite some wild rhythmic “jazzy” structural switches, it was more of an essence and not the (brief) jazz excursions that really sold that record for me
tl;dr - I prefer the balance here vs Spirit which lost itself in things that didn’t play to the band’s strengths (I don’t care to dissect Spirit again really)

Also I think that's a risk any dissodude takes in tweaking their sound. Some particular combination of textures and discordance is really going to hit the spot for me, and doing too much or, like in this case, not enough, has the chance of losing me. Like Pyrrhon hasn't surpassed Mother of Virtues for me, and that was with a discography dive leading up to the new album.

decent pick for Pyrrhon but “Survival” is their peak for me. Great band regardless.

I was bent on disliking this but it actually turned out pretty solid and enjoyable.

Relistening to Spirit and I can kind of see the merits of the "Spirit slander" in this thread. I think the atmosphere holds that album together for me while this one fell flat.

The 'I Want You' interpolation in the final track is pretty cringe tbh. It feels a bit worn out after Coroner had their way covering the song, you'd think avant-metalheads would leave it alone.

not quite alphaville levels of greatness but a fantastic return to form after mid af spirit nonetheless
