I've had this CD for a long time now and I've gone through periods when I've liked it and when I've actually come close to disliking it. But now, I can honestly say this is one of my favorite albums. As I've gotten more and more into late 80's and early 90's industrial I've come to appreciate this album so much more because it just stands on a higher plane than most others. There are certainly times when Trent's lyricism on this album isn't all that great (slipping on the tears you made me cry...lol) but you have to keep in mind many of these were the first songs he ever wrote in his life. But on the whole, despite his temporary limitations, he managed to write many solid, heartfelt and relatable songs. Also the music was pretty damn innovating for the time, which is pretty impressive considering he made this while working as a janitor at the recording studio. In all, this is one of those rare albums that will stand the test of time, even despite its "dated" sound as some would say. This was alot longer than I meant for it too be, might make it a soundoff.

Terrible review. Hardcore NIN fans acknowledge this as one of their best if not their best.
It isn't my favorite but certainly deserves more than a 3.5. At least a 4.5.
And Terrible Lie is a GREAT song. Deserves a 5/5.
That song is on almost EVERY NIN setlist.

This is definitely my favorite. Most people to lean more towards his more innovative releases, though.

Pretty Hate Machine is one of my favourite albums off all time. I listen to at least some of it every day and i think it's an almost flawless album. Ringfinger is so dam cool with it's Synthpoppy sequence and pounding industrial drums. My other favourites are Sin, Only Time, Terrible Lie and, of course, the anthemic Head Like A Hole.
Many complain it sounds cheesy and dated but i think it's one of the coolest sounding albums. Very danceable too, as opposed to the more Industrial Metal NIN album that followed. Wicked Synth sounds...sits alongside The Downward Spiral as my favourite NIN album.

I came very close to giving this album a 5. I don't think there's a bad track on it and Pretty Hate Machine really is THE album that began to bring industrial music to the mainstream.

"Kinda I Want To" has the most innovative use of surround sound I've ever heard.

A little too 80's for me. The keyboard gets a little irritating after a while, but all the songs are different and keeps you listening.
I love The Downward Spiral.
