Great review, though I disagree with the assessment. I have a feeling the reintroduction of growls gave people a false impression that this would be a return to old Opeth, but it’s really kinda like ICV and Sorceress with some heavier moments maybe reminiscent of Watershed or something. With that in mind I really enjoy what’s going on here. It’s no return to form, it’s just a grittier take on what Mikael and co have been doing for over a decade now.
Also, ain’t no way new Alpha Wolf clears this but I’ll check it out.

White noise out here answering their own question.
Appreciate you Scuro. I agree on your summary. But I think that principle is a lot of the reason why I found this record to be like this. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still be listening to this on/off over the years but I felt this was a disappointment of sorts. I’d even tend to think that if they left off the gritty death metal parts the whole story of the album may have grown on me better.

The only minor gripe I have with this is that, even though is cool to have Jethro's dude in here, I very much rather when he's piping and not talking.

yeah, spun this again today and that's how I'm currently seeing things
I already said as much re Scuro's comment (other thread), but many a savvy listener isn't actually comparing this to anything before Watershed, so for that I'm proud of the userbase! (no idea what's happening elsewhere)

I've missed the intelligent discourse this site has a tendency to only sometimes provide.

Yea, this isn't even close to pre Watershed in style. I have a hard times comparing it even to Watershed tbh. Newpeth through and through, but I like Newpeth

Agreed. It's nothing like their pre-Heritage days at all.
A very generous 4.0 at the moment, but I'm not so sure it'll stick around for long. Seems a difficult album to unpack, so who knows!

interesting, I hear a bunch of older Opeth in here. there's sprinkles of MAYH, Deliverance and Ghost Reveries across the record. Just not the melodies or heaviness, more like a rhythmic and transition thing

I actually really like how the growling is utilized here. I wouldn't consider any of the music here to be "death metal", the growling is instead a way to depict the main character's decrepit state while writing the document and his influence beyond the grave.

Now that this is settling in, it feels like 70% of their last 4 records infused with 30% of Ghost Reveries.
First 2 songs are my favorites even though I like the whole damn thing, closer included.
