The Cure has been and will be the greatest band of all time. Haven’t heard the new album yet, my family is all around this weekend, it’s all happy and it’s driving me nuts. Soon I’ll be alone again, feel miserable and will jam it finally. I’m a bit concerned about the hype, their music has always had the private, first-person perspective appeal, and now suddenly they’re all over the place. But I’m looking forward to it like I was about hearing Mezzanine for the first time. It’s a good time to be alive.

No need to be concerned, it is worth all the hype. It is a great exclamation point to a great run by Smith and friends. And if Endsong is the last song of the last full-length album, I say “well done chaps!”

This was a lovely read, Rowan. I'm stunned how ageless Smith's vocals are on here and the compositions certainly hold their own. I'm not a huge The Cure guy (aside from this, I've only heard Pornography and Disintegration) but I can't take a comeback this strong for granted. Mega-fans, really soak this one in.

A Fragile Thing is such an amazing song.

they have a claim for greatest band of all time
if not, they made the greatest album of all time

Can't call them the greatest band of all time, there is no such thing, but I'd certainly agree that The Cure are one of the more *necessary* bands. Like, even in the Ocean of Truly Great Bands, The Cure stand out as distinct and undeniable.

which?

My only gripe with this record is the keyboards, specifically on tracks like Alone and Endsong. If you're going to use effects that sound like a mellotron, why not just use a mellotron?

I think the weakest track is either A Fragile Thing or All I Ever Am. Also, I don't really love Alone until Smith begins to sing. But none of those songs are anything less than very good. It's a surprisingly consistent album.
And whichever demon he paid to keep his voice sounding so young is great at his job.

The part in Alone where Smith sings "Where did it go?" Is the musical highlight of the year for me

"I think too much of all to come
Of how it will be after I give up
My weary dance with age
And resignation moves me slow
Toward a dark and empty stage
Where I can sing the world I know"

more i jam this the more i love it. really killer stuff
except drone. idk how many listens its gonna take for that one to sell me but i cant get into it. would probably be fine on the self titled or smth but the industro/alt metal influence clashes hard w the rest of this for me

Songs Of A Lost World is actually not that DownTempo like expected, it has his UpTempo moments.
It is still a Meloncholic and Gloomy record that fits for this days of Autumn.
