weak bait weak user
but like most other sufjan records, it would have been better if his backing vocalists had sung the whole thing

This has QC issues - a small handful of absolute belters, an even smaller handful of dregs, and a lot of “good/fine/okay”.

I really did not want to like this. I thought Mercurial World, while a very good album, was bloated and way over-hyped. I don't particularly like the vocalist's voice, and I initially only liked one of the singles.
Also, I was looking forward to the new Fontaines DC and Bad Seeds albums and thought they'd be far better.
But fuck me if this isn't the best of the lot.
5.0 Cry For Me
4.5 Image
4.0 (everything else I don't mention below)
3.5 She Looked At Me, Death & Romance
Not rating the interludes.
And by the way, Johnny, while I don't often share your musical taste, you really are a talented writer. I'm very jealous.

Death & Romance fuckin rules but I doubt I'll ever revisit this in full.

I don’t know much about Nick Villa, but I had to find out his name: the drumming on this album is great.

Death & romance doesn’t have enough going on imo. Certainly enough times overall but not enough tension and release. Listening all the way through at 5am

Johnny actually spends more time on the main website and also writing reviews to post to sputnik than actually being on sputnik.

I really struggle to endure their sound across a whole album but Death & Romance is a banger
Also this only disappears off the rym 2024 #1 spot when you change the minimum user age to 37, a broader appeal than I was expecting.

I mean it has over a 4.1 with 10k ratings, I think the appeal is very broad

I think it's solid pop. In an age of poptimism, it's refreshing to hear a band blatantly say – we're not pop, we want to be perceived as ALTERNATIVE while nodding to prog rock stylistically - though it's mainly just the outros to the opener and Tunnel Vision that explore truly wild territory. The rest is a bit too safe for the big talk, but the Vampires/TV combo feels a bit Vespertine. Solid, but not groundbreaking mostly.

Incredible album. Everything from Vampire and on just hits for me
Also wow at trying to downplay the album’s popularity by citing the 37 year old thing lol. I feel this album is a vast improvement from Mecurial World on all fronts, yet you see many people using this album as an opportunity to “flex” their obscure comparisons from artists of the past 50 years (across many platforms and sites). For the most part it’s a progressive indie pop album, expecting the entire album to be groundbreaking feels like a pretty intense expectation to have going into it

I don't think mouldypigeon was trying to downplay the album's success on RYM - quite the opposite; they were making the point that it has quite wide appeal - not just younger people.
