>[S]ometimes his music is an overstimulating headache, and sometimes it’s the greatest damn thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

This is pretty much how I feel about this album. I feel like he’s trying to carry 40 lbs. of stuff in a 5 lb. bag: he’s just forcing things. It’s my least-favorite Jacob Collier album, so far.

The guy has ideas, and I applaud him for executing them.

Can’t rate this yet.

I think vol. 3 is my least favorite, even though I still like it. Those vol. 3 songs also cook live. Alita Moses does 'In Too Deep' so well.

Nah. He's already Coldplay. You've been beaten to the punch.

Checks out more than Coldplay, to be fair.

If Elon Musk was a positive person. Can't help but feel Musk is constantly trying to convince himself he's not miserable.

I suppose so. You know what they say, money can't buy happiness.

"WELLLL" gets so close to being a jam, but then again any band would write a jam with his budget and background.

Also to the people who praise him for his eclecticism: Pretty much any band featured in Japan's mainstream charts displays as much eclectic inspiration as Jacob does.

I think this album is a great example of having unlimited resources (time, money, talent) not translating into cohesive or impactful music. "Less is more" is like the only thing I can think about when listening to Jacob Collier. Though I can understand the people that are into this... kind of

God, I love this record. Blasting it almost every day.

Box of Stars pt. 2 going from rhythmic textiles of Cuban, Punjab, Moroccan, Brazilian and more in this sort of victory lap after the Vol. 1 callback... ugh give it to me. Gives me life.

Regarding eclecticism: I don't see it as a zero sum game. Is this album eclectic? Yes. Obviously whether that's to anyone's taste is up the individual. I like it.

Yeah, there was a time when I was a music minor in college and pretty fascinated with him and his theory concepts like super lydian and shit like that. I would read transcriptions of his pieces. But it didn’t really last. People swear he’s some exceptional singer but there are hundreds of artists I’ve heard with way more naturally rich and pleasant voices. He definitely gets lost in the sauce when it comes to possibilities. Like it’s cool that you can play a melodica solo over Dilla drums but it sounds pretty cheesy. There’s food for musicians/music nerds there but none of it has even approached a classic album or a strong, well-defined musical identity like a Marvin Gaye or a D’Angelo or a Jeff Buckley.
