This is....fine?
A bit underwhelming and gun shy, but it's more inessential than outright bad. The Bruce feature isn't amazing, but simply reading that it's there is a cool payoff for anyone who has been a fan of the band for a decade+ and knowing how intertwined his shadow has been for the group.
It does kinda feel like Get Hurt is Fallon's Pinkerton, a record that he aimed for the fences but felt bullied into not daring again. I don't think Get Hurt is a great record, but I did really appreciate them doing something different and really Trying. This kinda feels like a pretty alright record that solidifies them as a lgecay act. Maybe this is just a collection of songs to brush off the dust and get their sea legs, but I dunno. I'm not sure if I'll really return to it much

So glad this bands sputnik era is over with. Could not understand the worship these guys got.

I mean, they were never going to top β59 Sound anyway.

I used to be a big fan of this band and then I got pretty disappointed with "Get Hurt". Except for the b-sides: I love "Mama's Boys", "Sweet Morphine" and "Halloween" and I undestood why they were not included on the regular edition.
Not a big fan of Fallon's solo work.
And here I am very cautious with "History Books". I'm happy because it doesn't sound with any of the previous albums and I still sounds totally like a Gaslight Anthem album (I consider that just "Halloween" could really fit here). It's a pretty big risky move.
This album is great!!! There's almost anything I don't like. Maybe just the mixing of guitars on some parts.

It is insane how this bad has fallen. Still better than Get Hurts, but damn where is the energy they had earlier in their carreer. Also the production totally kill this

Never got into these guys at all, but Michigan 1975 is a jam

"More than β59 Sound, bubs?"
just realized i didnt see this lol sorry but yeah i think 59 sound is pretty good but not really the landmark masterpiece it gets hyped up as. honestly a bigger fan of brian's non gaslight albums over the main band (especially elsie) so i really dig that this sounds like his whole career in one record

It seems I'm in the minority here but I love Get Hurt and truly believe it's undeservedly underrated. History Books is greater than what I was expecting after a 9 year Hiatus. An all around great listen. Love Alex's leads and solos they are so melodic yet so earnest. I can so relate to Positive Charge's lyrics that the song made me tear up so bad.

do you think this band was hurt by or benefitted from the recent prevalence of the word "gaslight" in modern discourse
