Maybe they're attracting a whole new fanbase with these albums but the albums give off that vibe of retreating to a sound that they and the fans are most comfortable with at this stage and working within that.
I'm not complaining but there was a time an AnCo album was a 'big deal' and usually also a 'big artistic departure' - I'm not seeing that or indeed hearing that in their music

this is growing on me a lot, definitely better than the previous one, 'Genies Open' is great
warrants a 'light 4' I feel

Missed this when it dropped. It is weird how I fell off this band after 2012, because I really liked Centipede. I think they just took too long between projects and my attention diverted elsewhere (like Panda's solo stuff).
So far this record def feels like tired Aco, but I dig it.

That buildup on 'Defeat' is making me second guess my opinion of this band (at least this current era).

I had a dream where anco released a new album and it was as a 3.5
and it sounded good enough in the dream that I might drop my rating for this hm

can listen to Defeat on repeat but yeah the remainder of this never grew one bit. Gem&I and Soupcatcher have some redeeming qualities
shoulda just been one LP with the highlights between the last two

Interesting ratings on the last two albums. I've seen a lot of people praise them as a "return to form" or say something like "they're back! they're indie darlings again!" but I do not enjoy the albums whatsoever. To my ears, they completely lack the liveliness that made their earlier work so engaging. These make me want to fall asleep.

People are always quick to say "they're back!" when the darlings put out an okay song (see: arcade fire, strokes).
At least their solo stuff has been pretty good, for the most part. Avey Tare was doing the stuff I wanted AnCo to be doing with Eucalyptus and Cows, so I can't be too mad.

think I'm realizing that since like 2010 Panda Bear has been the real problem with this group

Haha wild last comment. I nearly know what you mean because I deemed that the issue when Painting With dropped. I was like, yeahhh, they're finally leaning too hard on looping his vocals and pushing Avey to the background. These last two albums don't give me that stink though. And honestly, Tangerine Reef and Bridge to Quiet don't even have him on them. And your 2010 marker I guess includes Centipede Hz which he really just has two lead tracks on that album and then sits a lot of it out I feel like. Sooo, yeah, I don't think that's it. It's just been a group of weird cats dealing with up and down popularity and not knowing what to do with it, I think. Sometimes, they seem to kind of love it, and other times, sprint away from it

Album is very meh (kinda suckish tbh), but I swear to god Defeat might be one of the greatest songs ever written.

When I saw them live in 2022 they played defeat and I had no idea what it was and I was fanning back tears.
