very well said man. definitely tons of former christians in those big bands. it was of course profitable for a time. wonder how much of it was money motivated. easy grift for some. saud from the crimson armada for example lol. but yeah i get the burnout aspect, really interesting kind of character study there intertwining faith, career burnout, artistry and money all with an audience looking on. messy concoction for sure.
and yeah the ones who were legit had a spotlight on them. some didn't handle it the best. but so hard with those expectations. led to some moments i'm sure guys look back and cringe at. and yeah i was reading that about tommy, a very interesting transformation. i'll have to check that out. he seems like a genuine good dude. i've never heard much of americans not of eastern european descent converting to orthodox. didn't even know it was allowed haha. i don't even know the distinctions between that and catholicism but know they are somewhat similar.

i know bands like he is legend were marketed as christian when they explicitly were not christian and resented the label.
i actually have a copy of a revolver mag cover about christian metal being the story of the year in 2006 (and the lead bands are as i lay dying and underoath who would both go onto reject christianity).
yeah the turn to orthodoxy in america is interesting, i think it gives followers a renewed sense of purpose and also claims to be the original church before the split with catholicism, so it has the appeal of being the oldest vein of christianity. i tried it out because i like experimenting with spirituality and it was interesting, it almost feels like ceremonial magic with the incense/chanting/etc although they would hate being characterized that way hahah.

not surprising about he is legend, guess just because they were on solid state. just a special and fascinating moment in time. it would be a great documentary. even a fictional movie haha, there's tons of great source material. someone should write that!
so much history with orthodox and catholic's, i like to learn about stuff like that. religious history is really intriguing to read on. all i knew really that it was the split and it was mostly eastern european. never even met someone who was orthodox. and yeah that is kind of the vibe i got from holyname haha. so it does a great job capturing that vibe, very interesting. you went to a church and saw what it was about?

He Is Legend was just solid state and running the same circles as christcore bands. The name at a glance does sound like it too
