Is the summary a quoted lyric section of the great 2000s hit "Don't Phunk With My Heart?"

It’s the chorus from the, uh, cum classic ‘Come Baby Come’ by K7

Love how this is never old fashioned, staid or stuffy but it also feels authentic and even a little vintage too.

He’s struck that perfect balance.

This has to be one of the strongest Drag City releases in recent years, and I'm saying that as a massive fan of their roster. It feels like Cory reigned in his trademark weirdness a little bit on this one while massively upping his songwriting and it all just fits so damn well together. There's not a single song here I dislike, just 40 minutes of perfection.

I had my phone plugged in in my car and Housefly started playing but I thought it was coming from the radio at first and I was like “hey I recognize this, this is good”

good sign

Im so much with Sunny with this. I feel like a lot of the songs gravitate toward the country-rock side of things. Not that the genre really matters in the end N

This album slaps

Driving Through Heaven is so fucking good

' a lot of the songs gravitate toward the country-rock side of things'

agreed, but they go harder than most country rock I feel

To clarify my comment, what I really meant was that I like the more country-ish moments on here the best (even though a lot of the heavier guitar moments go very hard)

Jim O’Rourke’s Insignificance is definitely a touchpoint here. A worthy addition to the Drag City canon. Though after a couple spins I’m not sure about the songwriting.

you see that's where I don't want to label this a country rock album because I feel the song writing isn't going for conventional country rock paydirt

I think it's going for more psych wig out and rambling stuff like even, perhaps, Built to Spill but definitely J. Mascis

Jim O'Rourke is also a good shout, he also has that 'vintage' psychedelic feel at times

Ranked/Rated:

1. Driving Through Heaven [5/5] (instantly familiar, instantly nostalgic, instantly a SOTY contender)

2. Housefly [5/5] (just the riff alone)

3. Horsebait Sabotage [5/5] (incredible song up to 1:40..then phenomenal from there on)

4. Persuasion Architecture [4.5/5] (very odd, but good)

5. Wings [4.5/5] (perfect opener for this)

6. Twins [4.5/5] (starts more standard but again the final third achieves liftoff)

7. Motion Sickness [4.5/5] (most retro sounding song maybe, cool way to close)

8. Ghost Ship [4/5] (the most conventional song...still great, just pleased this wasn't the story with the whole album)

See “Driving Through Heaven” is a case in point for what I just said, lots of cool moments but I’m not totally sure I’m convinced by what it’s going for as a piece.

Some albums ARE just a succession of cool moments and I think that's what I like about this - it's shunning standard verse chorus verse at least a little bit and there's some wild choices for an album largely in the country rock vein

He's not an amazing singer, he's not an amazing writer of choruses...but I think this album plays to his strengths and sort of ignores the weaknesses

Those are all fair takes - it’s early days with this, I have a feeling I’ll come around more fully soon.

I hope so but I get anyone not totally warming to this, it’s quite eccentric
