sputnik has pretty shite criticism writing anyway cause of the whole fixation on "describing the sound of the music" over actually making a judgment call/analyzing culture/all the other things a critic can and should do
|
| |
not that i place much stock in critics anyway. there are a few writers here who still do a good job without relying too much on the hamfisted clunky metaphors others hold dear

'sputnik has pretty shite criticism writing anyway cause of the whole fixation on "describing the sound of the music" over actually making a judgment call/analyzing culture/all the other things a critic can and should do'
id imagine thats because most people have no idea how to do the latter
|
| |
and id rather they did the former well than the latter poorly
or even worse, describe the sound the of the music by using technical music theory jargon like some prog nerd high on dream theater

ValenDreth is the best writer on the site
|
| |
why would you describe music on a music site instead of breaking your back reaching for super insightful cultural analysis. especially on something so clearly representative of the state of our world today as a Demi Lovato album. people could cement their legacy as one of the great minds of our time but instead they're just talking about chords and notes and shit
|
| |
i know youre 17 colton but if you read any media criticism pre-fantano and pitchfork you'd know what im talkin about
|

ever heard of pauline kael? lester bangs?

art doesnt exist in a vacuum, not all of us are anti-intellectuals who think analysis is tryhard and heckin cringe, my friend
|
| |
i was writing a piece for coughs - 'fright makes right' that tried to use analysis as a framing device. basically one paragraph situating the album within the political /cultural landscape of the time that then informs the rest of the review when it gets to the more directly musical analysis
i feel like thats a good balance thats easy enough to achieve
