I've been listening to this a lot and I think I prefer Traveling Mercies, but she's just so lovely. Was convinced she was much older than she is, weird maturity about her music/lyrics, like an older person telling a lifetime's worth of stories.

Also I'm obsessed with the fact that that's a cello on Old Gods; I'm sure I've heard it done before, but didn't know people strummed them like that.

I find this album a bit hit and miss, but damn if Hometown Hero isn't one of the best songs I've heard in a while. Extremely powerful

@Jesper, I guess "hit and miss" isn't a great wording for how I feel. I do think all the songs are at least good/great but there's only a few that I've really gravitated to more than that (at least yet). The top three right now would be Hometown Hero, Lost Woman's Prayer, and If Trouble Comes A Lookin'.

I kind of get you Sunny, this does drop off for me quite a bit in the last 3 tracks but the first 7 are wonderful for the most part.

Ah yes, great bump to the features and a great reminder to get emotional while listening to Let 'Em Burn

last 2 tracks are a couple of the very best! There might be a slight slump in the middle but this thing finishes quite strong

Still more than her previous album at least.

“Old Gods” was one of my most played songs of 2020.

So much of this album is just a total emotional gut punch and the fact that it never feels overwrought or schmaltzy is pretty incredible.

New EP dropped today. Apparently it’s a concept album about the Macbeth witches, expanding on (and including new versions of) “Old Gods”.

…and unsurprisingly it is great. Fittingly she goes for a more gothic sound than she has before.

Hope she doesn't give up that literary, storytelling quality of her lyrics though, one of her greatest strengths imo

What could be more literary than making an album based on Shakespeare?

Haha fair, I guess i meant that sense of humanist realism she's got

Ah I see, makes sense. It seems this is a sort of one-off project, but also she’s framing it in the context of “reclaiming” women’s narrative in history, so I think it’s aligned with that humanist ethos in that respect.
