yh never mind that mastodon are one of the most commercially successful 00s metal bands that don't sound like pure shit and that CtS is one of their most popular releases with either their biggest or second biggest song bang at the start do you know how to use a literal radio this is dumber than a tool thread

Well, to be honest I did see Mastodon switching towards a more commercial approach after CtS. The Hunter had more radio friendly tracks than anything they had released before, and OMRtS had even more. That's not necessarily bad though, yet in this case it kind of was until we got this one haha. I still love the Hunter and EoS, but facts are facts.

It sucks for some/many I'm aware Ghandi. Not for most of Mastodon fans. Fans are biased indeed but they know what they re saying, if that s any possible in your big brain XD

If they ever passed on radio, I would definitely see more from The Hunter there than OMATS.

Nice, m/ m/ m/!
I haven't heard this yet but the hype is growing, excited to spin this.
Great review Gnocchi, writing something engaging this long isn't easy but it works. Just two things I noticed: not sure that "eschew" is the word you're looking for in the first paragraph, and the first sentence of the second paragraph reads a little strange, I might suggest saying "Georgia's latest export".

@ddd Firstly Mastodon do hit the radio and are actually doing so right now with Teardrinker, they've reliably charted on American rock radio since signing to reprise
Secondly as a big Hunter booster I think their clear aspirations to catchy accessible guitar pop are more often than not held back by a seeming obligation to keep things Prog enough for the longtime fanboys, hence radioprog. It feels like a half-measure and the best moments across their last two albums have consistently been the moments where they fully commit to being anthemic and straightforward (steambreather/gigantium)

Shit, fuck my tiny country ahah the slow long tracks here, with the right ballance is where it s at for me boys. They are my faves but also give the bangers way more power in context, than when they were released as singles f.e.
Tks for clarifying your pov

Yeah this split-the-difference approach is clearly doing it for a lot of people so more power to em if they want to keep at it, but personally I hope they just go full pop-rock or do an acoustic album or something to shake things up

I'll turn an eye on a lot of stupid sputnik hot takes, but this is ridiculous.

@kompys
Unfortunately they ll prob go for what you ask.
I ll have to wait a few more years, and maybe produce a second child, to get a full on prog rock (ditching metal) release eheh. This is close enough for now ah. I guess an acoustic one would be cool too.
"CTS kinda sucks tho" yeah this is kinda blasphemy, specially when I m wearing my CtS shirt

this album is way better than the singles would make you think it is. very moody and straight up depressing songs on here. brent's songs are the best
