i just skimmed through love is dead to see what the fuss is all about and tbh i quite enjoyed most of it except for the one song that was basically an imagine dragons song. definitely a step back songwriting-wise from their other stuff though

Agree re: Love Is Dead. It’s a solid 3/5 which is not a bad thing (esp since their first two albums are 3.5s in my book).
This was pretty good on first go. The more guitar-driven sound on a lot of tracks is a neat change of pace for them (though I’ve always felt their songwriting was very much in line with guitar-driven indie/dream pop and pop rock even if the sound was more electronic), the peak certainly being “How Not To Drown” which is probably my favorite song by them. Not an incredible album by any means but definitely a bounce back after the (only slightly) weaker previous album.

I never got the backlash against their previous album, it always seemed fine to me and (almost) on par with their earlier work.

Nightmares, These Violent Delights, and California are my favorite tracks. All three of them may be among their best songs to date so far.
Solid album -- and a pretty significant comeback for them following their last release.
Glad they're back on the right path again. This was a pleasant surprise.
