Not disappointed in the review, sorry, kinda came across that way. Disappointed in the album.

Glad I'm not the only one that actually kinda loves "These Black Claws." It caught a lot of flack despite being the most interesting track here by far.

it's not nearly as bad as sput is making it out to be, but it's also still one of the weakest tracks here

I find it to be the strongest lol. Throws a curveball without being a retread of Inmazes. First three tracks are solid for sure, but the missing atmosphere and delicacy is a shame. The middle is very bloated by the same-sounding tunes, with "Stone Leader" being an exception only because it manages to be the heavier of the bunch. Even then, I wasn't really sold on the deathcore-esque breakdown that barges in; the bombast feels so forced, like every song NEEDS to be huge RIGHT NOW.
Subtlety is what made these fellas succeed and take an extra step in Applause of a Distant Crowd, but that tactic got tossed out the window here. I'm glad they're gaining new fans and I'm thrilled to see them trending, but I'm not entirely sold on the return to the rock-out direction. More power to all y'all that enjoy it, and like I said, the singles go hard, but I preferred the a e s t h e t i c approach.

This is closer to Inmazes for sure. But to say this lacks atmosphere rings false to me. Each song has a distinct feel to it which I really like with purposeful arrangement choices that make the songs special. Also I do love These Black Claws.
Unrelated but for a first review this is extremely solid.

"Have to say, slightly disappointed. Might be having my own take on this"
Jeez way to murder a guy on his first rev. :[
And the fact that your response is on another page makes this even funnier.

lol yeah I fired from the hip there without knowing the implications. I'm cancelled :^(
@peartnoy stacked by Applause, the atmosphere just ain't the same for me mate. Way too over the top here, and every track from "Freak" to "Inside Your Fur" fails to differentiate substantially. The songs ARE there, but buried beneath heaps of bombast and replications of Inmazes.

I really need to stop listening to every single a band puts out. By release I already knew half the songs and unfortunately it was the better half. I was lowkey expecting this to be their best album because I loved the singles so much, but the last 5 tracks, while well made, just aren‘t all that interesting to me.

Mmhmm, they're all solid. Like, a 3.5 is not bad, it's great. But I really was hoping this would achieve greater heights.
Worth noting "These Black Claws" and "Head Mounted Sideways" DO attempt a more ominous atmosphere that could've been cool, but it's never touched on past those two instances. Rest just tries to hard to be a spectacle 24/7 while Applause knew when to just let things develop and limit songs artfully.

Yeah i never listen to singles. It's hard but I know it's gonna spoil the album when it eventually comes out. It's like watching a movie trailer dozens of times with some of the best parts before actually watching the whole thing.
I haven't heard ETID's single for example and I really want new ETID.

Agreed about the ominous atmosphere in Head Mounted Sideways and These Black Claws, they have an eerie vibe that isn't present on the other songs. I guess I was expecting more of that, along with more heavyness.
Then there is Napalm, Future Bird and Inside Your Fur who all have these epic outro fade out sequences, but for me never reach the heights of something like Inmazes' title track for example. Good tracks nonetheless.

Gimme some more "Ruby Pool" and the t/t off of Applause. Me want.

Ruby Pool is probably my favourite song by them to be honest. I didn’t mention Applause too much because I’d probably fanboy about it too much haha. I can see in retrospect how skipping over it in the first para can come across as jarring though

I don't think listening to singles is the problem, I think the back half of this album is lol

Imma mention Applause so much homie.
And yeah singles in of themselves are not bad. However, it's always good to be skeptical about them; they don't always indicate how an album is gonna be overall, good or poor.

Eh, I think listening to 4/9 tracks before the album even releases definitely has an effect of slightly reducing my enjoyment of an album, simply because there isn't as much new stuff. Add to that the practice of bands (understandably) wanting to show off the best songs of their album as singles and you are often left with a slightly underwhelming album release. If I didn't listen to These Black Claws beforehand for example, that track would undoubtably be a highlight on first listen, but now the song is just old news for me. That doesn't mean the back half of the album being a bit weaker isn't part of this problem ofc.
Another example is the most recent The Ocean album. I loved every single for that record and thought they were among the best songs they ever created. Unfortunately that meant I had already listened to most of the album's highlights before release.

This album is so disappointing. Their other albums had memorable songs. I don't care to revisit this after two listens.

I'll revisit the singles, nothing too noteworthy after that though. I think time is gonna be pretty kind to "Black Claws" imo.
