Super not hyped anymore. This is a bad response.

I'll stick to listening to my continental breakfast for now.

Half way through and yeah Machine Guns is best track so far.

B-sides of Assassination is not a bad way to describe this, for an ever-changing band like Ulver, it seems they got stuck on this sound without being able to develop it.

Great read btw Johnny!

this was pretty neat for the first Ulver album I've properly sat down and heard (aside from one listen of Bergtatt a few years ago which I wasn't really all that taken with).

I think I enjoyed "Machine Guns and Peacock Feathers", "Russian Doll", and the closer the most.

What would be some other Ulver albums to check out, aside from the previous which apparently has a fairly similar sound?

Assassination, Blood Inside and Wars of the Roses in that order for this (broad) vein of their sound!

Think your reaction is on point and a nice indication for returning fans - this is still relatively solid, even if it doesn't live up to the group's creative standards!

It's their worst since Wars of the Roses

War of Roses is the last truly great Ulver album, even if it feels incomplete as a whole.

There'd maybe be a case for that if Messe wasn't vastly more cohesive and impressive over repeat listens imo

I am deleting my account now but my alts will eat budgie in his sleep OK cya XD

Wars is perfect. I really don't see many similarities between it and Assassination/this though.

You could also give Shadows a go Ashtiel, it's one of their most acclaimed non metal releases for a reason!
