i would think they want to get better at writing. pretty stupid to suggest they don't want to improve and learn from their mistakes, unless they're insanely sensitive and can't handle criticism, in which case maybe don't post stuff that opens you to justifiable ridicule?

Not necessarily Gyro, I think in this case he just wanted to go off his chest. And I want to think this site gives you the freedom to do so.

Not everyone writing here wants to be a better writer.

I mean, I get you, but given his comments/responses it doesn't seem like what he was looking for was any kind of workshopping. For sure, ridicule, feel justified, that's cool, I'm not saying people shouldn't post honest (even dishonest) feedback, they 100 per cent should. People should have tougher skin. In the same way, though, I wouldn't feel entitled to indiscriminate receptivity of any and all criticism I dish out.

it is nice of you to assume their goals in writing about music

I joined to talk about music and to springboard more discussion

If you’re looking to be “professional” there are tools to improve but it’s an unpaid collection of amateurs writing about music and that’s part of the charm and accessibility: an opportunity to open a new thread of album chattering

afaik posting a review of any sort isn’t an invitation for writing critique lol it’s just somebody talking about music that moves them

again, if you're posting something deeply personal on a music reviewing website with community feedback then i think you open yourself up to criticisms. are we supposed to coddle every person who writes something embarrassing?

Didn’t know the “add comment” was actually a community feedback portal

it's not about "being professional". nobody gets paid to write on this site, and this isn't a livejournal website either; if you're going to post something that's corny and lame then yeah the community should be able to ridicule it.

" it’s just somebody talking about music that moves them" This.

And, no, we are not, but Idk man, if I see someone exposing his heart out like that, last thing I'm gonna do it's shoot it.

I just move on to another thread.

look man, it's not uncommon on this website to discuss the review in question, it happens literally all the damn time. if there's some unwritten rule where we're not allowed to laugh at the ones that are over the top melodramatic and cringey as fuck and we must instead focus on the music then that's news to me

The community can ridicule it, but like has just happened, the community can also backlash against the ridicule and here we are

the backlash against the ridicule seems to be "don't hurt his feelings". i don't see many people arguing that it was solid writing. i wish my earlier reviews got more straight up criticisms from the community. that shit helps you develop - even if you don't want to be a writer

Idk if it’s fair to say he’s against criticism, the initial comment that criticized the review was pretty condescending and felt far from a genuine effort to help him improve

But yeah, gotta be more thick skinned

I mean if you just want to talk about music, all this aspiring music journalism feedback makes the site pretty useless to that person

But yeah if you want to make it about coddling feelings or whatever that can be your thing, and you can protect your need to ridicule lame shit on the internet

There will always be varying degrees of seriousness and professionalism as well as differing opinions of what constitutes a good review. I like the personal style but I'll admit it's a tough line to toe - very easy to fall off the edge into TMI/embarrassing (not saying the original review was - I never got to read it). As long as the reviewer is receptive to constructive advice and the criticizer exercises a modicum of respect then everyone wins.

Based on the comments, seems like the tough love might have had a sharper tone than needed and the response was defensive so nobody won, least of all the comments section which should be about this excellent and atmospheric slice of folk/pop.

Well said. On that note, back to actually discussing music

I just realized there’s a version of the Lord Huron song The Night We Met that features Phoebe. Not one of their better songs imo but they’re one of my favourite bands, if we ever got a Lord Huron + Phoebe album I would probably actually die. Also Kyoto is the shit

Don’t know much about the zeitgeist of popular American music and how to measure it

But in my mind, Bridgers star has risen much higher than lord Huron (who were my partner and I’s walk-down-the-aisle song). Is this true, Americans? I feel like I have a higher likelihood of referencing phoebe and getting confirmation than lord Huron

Would be a dope collab

Bridgers is way more reference-able than Lord Huron. If I mentioned LH to someone they'd think I was talking about a cult or something.

Damn that’s awesome, which song? But yeah Phoebe is probably more popular, although The Night We Met is huge from being on that one show. And they have a pretty dedicated fanbase, their subreddit is pretty active and what not.

i don't think any writing is beyond critique, provided it's done in good faith
