Styx is fine enjoyable arena rock, 5'ing this I do not see. late 70's safe pop songs. Hey I live in the 70's even like Styx but their ceiling is 3.5

anybody here the early 70's styx more prog

I wouldn't characterize this as safe pop songs at all though. That's true of some of their other albums but not this one.

Yeah I mean they're definitely not edgy either, but I think from Crystal Ball to Pieces of Eight they really tapped into a sweet spot between rock and theatrics that rarely works so well. They didn't descend into a majority pop status until Cornerstone, but even that album and Paradise Theater worked well. After that, as it got into the mid-80s, was a different story.

I agree with you Sowing, but I would change it to "from Equinox to Pieces Of Eight". But, their last album The Mission is a very well comeback.

True, I love Equinox. Really, anything they did prior to Cornerstone wasn't safe pop. I don't necessarily enjoy their earliest albums that much, but even they were straight up prog rock.

Doesn't get any heavier than when Dennis DeYoung hits those high notes

I think they would be in your wheelhouse if you dig this so much

different but kinda the same, like REO, or BTO, bad co., early Journey, war child Jethro T

all in the same place at least to me

REO Speedwagon is aight but they lean so much more heavily into the power balladry. It has its place, but they're not nearly as diverse or consistent as Styx.

Same could be said for a lot of Journey's stuff, although 'Wheel in the Sky' is one of my all time favorite jams.

Not familiar with BTO and need to get into more Jethro because I always liked what I heard.
