Normally I can see why the majority of people find something bad, but in this case idgi

I find most of the songwriting self-indulgent and haphazard and the change in sound seems reactive and bitter, just an unpleasant experience for me

"I find most of the songwriting self-indulgent"
I'd have to disagree with this point, in fact I think this is the least self indulgent of his projects, I think one of Will's strenghts was he knew how to make that benefit the music and overall listening experience
change in sound is definetely reactive yeah but I feel calling it bitter is a bit of a stretch

Reactive in what sense?

Man I think they made a mistake releasing all these different versions of the album. The vinyl version is hands down the best, the tracklist has the best flow, the tracks feel more essential thanks to the album being more concise and it has the best version of Hollywood. If the vinyl version was the only version I'm almost certain people would be kinder to the album.

@Cormano
I think I agree with you in a sense, Will and co clearly don't want to keep making guitar driven 90s-inflected indie like TOD forever and this is them trying to branch out and find a new style that suits them. When it works it really really works. They clearly don't want to be typecast as 2010s 'indie heroes' and this album is them pushing against that.

Hollywood sounds like Car Seat Headrest tried to create their own version of Custer.

I don't like the single version but I do understand that on some level it's being ironic. That doesn't mean it's good, if you shit on your hands and clap you still have shitty hands. But I think it'd worse if Will and Andrew were being completely sincere, and the "radio version" is better.

Yeah holllywood is pretty bad. i'm not huge on what's with you lately either. every other song is great

it honestly ruins the album for me, and i'm not even being hyperbolic. it's truly that awful.

it may be my favourite song. what's wrong with me...

the thing is that Will is clearly capable of introspection on a pretty deep level, and he can write phenomenal lyrics, as demonstrated by his back catalogue.
Hollywood is just so.... adolescent. And not in a pure, realised way like Twin Fantasy, but in a really cringeworthy, edgy, hot take kind of way. It comes across like a first draft of an unfinished idea. Maybe it's meant to be - maybe it's meant to be ironic, a joke, not to be taken seriously. But that's not what I listen to Will's music for, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that.
I personally think there's no enjoyment in listening to music purely for titillation, because a bad song that's deliberately bad is STILL a bad song. It's still on the album, rearing it's acne-ridden face on every playthrough.
It just.... sucks, man.

I've seen a few Hollywood stans here and there but shit, your favorite song? fuck
your Pavement comparisons that you've brought up also confuse me, as I just can't see how that's the case with this particular song, and that's another thing I've always loved about Will is how he managed to pull off that Pavement sound so smoothly as early as the numbered albums which are just now turning 10 years old, that's just completely missing here

I mean it's not like I listen to his stuff always expecting some dead ass serious music, part of his charm was that even on sad bastards like NYM or HTLT he found a very clever way to inject some fucking witty humour which in turn made for a more compelling and sincere listening experience, in that sense he reminds me a lot of Isaac Brock. Hollywood is just missing all of that, interesting concept that's poorly executed like it happens with many jokes

"I've seen a few Hollywood stans here and there but shit, your favorite song? fuck" ... my favourite song on this record, if that wasnt clear. Good lord, not even my taste is that bad to claim it as my fave song ever. Idk, I like it cause it's catchy and fun. Eh.

haha no worries, I do get why some people really enjoy that track, for me it really isn't to this band's standards and also the fact that doesnt really blend that well within the rest of the album, I think it could have been an allright stand alone single if anything

for sure, it doesn't blend well with the overall tone or the record, I'd agree. I suppose that's why my review ended up being rooted to the hodgepodge/creative spirit narrative, cause yeah, some of the choices here don't stand up to objective scrutiny, if I'm being honest with myself, but i appreciate the personal passion and expression that led to the slightly ridiculous end result
