Also finally listened to Sea Change and it tops everything here minus Black Honey, The Window, and Salt and Shadow. Sounds like a Palms track, which automatically makes it better ;-)

Spot on review, Sow. How did they go from Vheissu and Illusion, both cold hard classics, to this dreary slab?

Fear will kill your mind and steal your love as sure as anything
Fear will rob you blind and make you numb to others' suffering
And I've felt its touch too many times and I've had enough
Great lines, great delivery.

Eh. Agreed on the delivery more than the line itself but I guess it's alright...

Sowing have you heard what Dustin has said about Thrice lyrics from the past? Specifically Beggars? He pretty much says he would never even think to write lyrics like that now.

My main problem with this band is honestly the vocals. Dustin is such a boring vocaliat most of the time, dude sounds the same in most songs and his voice is already pretty generic as far as alt rock goes. Would like more stuff lile Salt and Shadow. Kind of wish they brought a bit of the screaming from the past into the newer stuff in a satisfying way.

I've always considered Dustin to be one of the main attractants of Thrice. Have you heard his solo song It's Not Enough? One of my favorite vocal performances ever.

Palms is worse than this imo; the motel art lyrics are more pronounced there (e.g. Everything Belongs ugh). For me, Dustin's lyricism has been waaaay too on the nose since Major/Minor. All that changed after the hiatus was the direction his heavy-handedness leaned.

It's not just the writing style. He was fairly honest that none of the lyrics on Beggars reflect his opinions now. Which sucks in my opinion but ...oh well.

"What does the song want to say? How does it want to say it? Constantly asking myself these questions. Not really an issue if you write lyrics first but, that is not how Thrice rolls generally."

People like Sea Change? I listened to it once or twice and thought it really deserved its bside status. Guess I'll have to give it another go.
And Sowing, as another lyrics guy I'm totally with you that the decline in lyrical quality, which I think started with M/M is the most disappointing thing about recent Thrice. It's honestly just baffling that Dustin turns this stuff in.

Sea Change is the best song they've released post-hiatus

.Deeper Wells was better than Palms imo. Palms could have been much better if they had cut some of the tracks out and implemented the songs off Deeper Wells

this record is horrible, I forgot it even existed. I have to say though that "death from above" is a great track and I'd love if they had included more stuff like that here... How the mighty have fallen, Thrice is one of my favorite bands. But this is just so uninspired...

I think we all know that Dustin and Teppei like to do acoustic sets from almost all their songs. If you listen to the acoustic renditions of older songs, they sound amazing, full of energy and passion, if you give a listen to this album's renditions you'll notice how bland they are compared to their older songs... I don't even know why they keep releasing music, it's like they do it just for the sake of it.
