I also get that feeling these guys could be so much more if they weren't trying to appeal to the mainstream, but I guess their career thanks them for it. To me everything from The Defiant and on is better than the first 4 tracks. Bleed Into Me sucks but Scattering the Ashes is great. Most of the solos here give me the feeling they do just enough for credit that they shred but really if you blink you'll miss it. Album feels like the bare minimum but still quality.

Waiting on my CD and vinyl versions to arrive next week yet I had the digital version blasting on loop all day while working. Yes, I was looking so forward to this that I pre-ordered three different formats of this album. And boy, it was worth every cent.

love the trajectory they've been on post-SITS. didn't love that album but I think the band is all the better because of it.
only complaint here is I didn't care for Bleed Into Me & I needed Bending the Arc to be another minute or two longer smh. great job guys

I think I actually predicted with SITS that if they were to lose the overly poppy elements and get the trash, grit and growling back in along with the new found melodies that they'd really be onto something. Turns out I was right with TSATS.
This one's kind of like In Waves where it's more musically straight forward and has a more 'classical' metal vibe to it. But I think that coupled with the brevity proved to be a strength of the album that lets it stand out from the rest of their discography nicely.
Still, it would be impressive if they were able to top off Shogun. That one has always been their best album and TSATS, as strong as it was, came pretty damn close to that height.

I swear these guys used to be one of Sputnik's favorite punching bags. Now look at them. It's impressive really.

To be fair, they gained the ire of many when they first started largely because of Rolling Stone labeling them as 'the next Metallica' in 2006. Something even the band themselves resented.
Actually, it reminded me of a video where Matt gives a talk about failure and dealing with it, also talking in part about how they were hated early on. It's pretty inspiring and kind of funny so it's well worth the time watching.
