What do you have against this one? Its shimmering romance seduces me every time.

take out the opening pair and on the sea and this is a gauntlet of bland melodies, homogenous dynamics, overplayed textures, wanna be anthems that never take off, and percussion that becomes distractingly shit the moment you pay the vaguest attention to it

still a major step up from Teen Dream so I can't hate it, but Depression Cherry wiped this off the map (and 7 is still their uncontested best)

Hmm interesting take. I'll concede that not every song rises to the heights of the opening pair and On The Sea, but I think Lazuli and especially New Years Day come pretty close. Outside of those 5 (so, half the album) the melodies' collective floor is mildly forgettable (but still pretty!) [whereas the aforementioned highlights comprising the LP's better half are anthemic and memory-defining], the textures can indeed be overplayed (but if you ask me that plays into the schmaltzy romance of the atmosphere at-large), and the percussion can indeed ring a bit hollow (although, if it were worth anyone's time [it isn't] I might play devil's advocate by wondering what sort of percussion would fit this vibe better -- it's obviously meant to be high on treble, very melody-centric, and intentionally not complex). Estimated rate of agreement with jotw = 31%, possibly a non-mwY high! ;-)

Oh, and further agreement can come in the form of me also not getting the Teen Dream hype (at least in relative terms to the band's vastly superior high points). DC took a long time to grow on me but it grew hard and now my BH ranking probably goes Bloom > DC > 7 > the rest, with Once Twice Melody likely to land near the top of that ranking somewhere.

This has always been a band I *should* be into, but I've never quite arrived there. For some reason, though, I'm looking forward to the new one, and hopefully that will turn the tide? Nothing like an overly ambitious double LP to win me over.

I'm still pissed by the awful way the new album was scheduled to release... I really hope it doesn't catch on as a trend it's so stupid.
it is also bloated and kinda mid most of the time.

Think I've decided that this has higher peaks but Once Twice Melody is more consistent (even in spite of its gargantuan length!). Bloom retains the sentimental tie-breaking edge, but damn is the new one astoundingly good. In fact, they could have called it Bloom II and I would have eaten it right up. Very similar atmosphere full of the kind of starry, romantic vibes that I live for.
