What makes this “post-country”? Just sounds like 80s/90s country with a bit more outlaw influence to me.
|

maybe im just ignorant on post-50s/60s country (very possible) but this sounds more indie/goth influenced to me

I’ve seen other people say this has post-punk/jangle indie influence but honestly I think people are mistaking that for a general 80s aesthetic, which maybe is bolstered by the fact that he has an almost post-punk like baritone when he goes for it, and also the lack of common country instruments like steel guitar makes it sound a bit more indie-ish. I say it all the time though that people have an overly rigid conception of what country is and that the line between country and rock is a lot blurrier than a lot of people think it is.

No you're right Ryus, this is definitely indie-influenced.
Boney, for sput's resident countryhead, you're sounding a bit incorrect there.

So did dozens of country acts in the 80s and 90s

Sandwich what I guess I really mean to say is I don’t see this as any more indie influenced than any other alt-country act so it’s relatively unremarkable in that sense.

Like I’m sorry but if he didn’t have the mask and the generally mysterious persona and weren’t gay I don’t think this would have caught on nearly as much. Not that I blame him for it, I like this well enough and it’s a genius marketing ploy.

i mean yeah thats for sure

Like, bands like the Mekons were mixing country and post-punk as far back as 1985 (and in a much more interesting way might I add, dig their album Fear and Whiskey for a taste).
But I’ll stop raining on everyone’s parade. Glad people enjoy this! /rant

Mekons are/were indeed amazing back then!

I've got no clue what any of you are talking about right now (gay cowboys? mysteries?).
I just like the country/punk/indie blend going on here, kind of reminds me of a release you'd see 15 years ago or something. It's cool.

Sandwich, yeah I mean the best way to meet this is on its own terms but every press piece I’ve seen on the guy is all about how he’s the queer masked cowboy, it’s a whole schtick - and a cool enough one, but I’m not gonna let that make me overestimate the music.

"This seems like something sandwichbutthole would dig"
Yee-haw indeed.
"every press piece I’ve seen on the guy is all about how he’s the queer masked cowboy"
I see where you're coming from then, sounds annoying.
Even this review kind of has that twinge to it now that I'm reading it.
Probably a symptom of being signed to Sub Pop more than anything, their marketing team is on-point, even in the dead days of indie.
