this is definitely top 5 aoty, cellophane is still as breathtaking as when it was released. i was a little worried after holy terrain and home with you were a step down in quality, but they've grown on me since hearing them in the context of the album, and mirrored heart and sad day are brilliant as well.

"the songwriting is so stuffed with platitudes and cliche that even the occasional great production choices and interesting thematic work cannot compensate."

Song writing is by the numbers and too obvious in its attempts to please - was how I interpreted it
Spot on tbh
Whole thing is way too on the nose, not awful to listen to but tedious as a full listen for me

Agreed with that. Nothing here really excites me, all sounds pretty lukewarm save for Cellophane

I don’t much get on with Björk but even I feel like stepping and defending her from comparisons to this - Bjork’s song writing is very much her own, this just sounds like typical written by committee slightly quirky ‘10s ballad’y pop with an Arca production side dish

Yeah, tried again but nope, this kind of pop music (this, Angel Olsen, Lana) does absolutely nothing for me. If I'm gonna jam a pop album it'll be something that's at least a little fun. Lorde's Melodrama is the only record I feel that has perfected this art-pop approach because it still sounds like an honest-to-goodness pop album you can sing along to. There's none of that on here. It's all very drab and artsy-fartsy.

I love art pop that doesn't try to grab hooks by the throat though. Sure, Melodrama toed the line perfectly, but there's something to be said for pop that eschews big catchy melodies in favor of experimentation, which is something this does. I appreciate it just as much as I do pop that's all bangers, like Emotion or Dangerous Woman. Just depends on what you're looking for; in Lucman's case he prefers the latter - in my case I probably err ever so slightly towards the FKA Twigs/LDR type.

That's weird because I don't like Angel Olsen or Lana either; boring as hell. I don't think Twigs is close to that "kind of pop music".
