I dare you to listen to the first and last three songs on Schmilco, as well as "Happiness" and "Quarters", and come back and tell me you still believe that.

I will, but I doubt it will change my mind.

can't believe I let you all convince me this was some kind of return to form when there was no drop off to come back from
I'm actually pissed off right now

I'm more annoyed at myself really for having been convinced that the Schmilco era stuff was less than great.
Jury's still out on this, I do like it to at least a mid 3.5 level but it still kind of lacks a home run. I trust the boys but the more I think about it the more this album does start to feel a bit contrived. The music is good, but are the intentions right? Are Jeff and co as surprised as anybody that people are latching onto this one more than the past couple?

Pretty good record. I wish there was anything that matched Love Is Everywhere, but a solid collection of tracks nonetheless. I can definitely see this one growing

Album does seem a bit more outward looking both musically and lyrically - they had the air of ‘lads in their own studio/jam band’ the last couple.
As people have said, this comes out after YFH and it would have sounded more logical than Ghost even. It sounds more O’Rourke’y - I can’t remember which ones he worked on other than YHF but this has a bit of that sound.
The runs of tracks 4-6 and 10-12 are my two favourite three song Wilco runs since Ghost

I would consider both Quiet Amplifier and Hold Me Anyway to be homeruns

Maybe ‘One Wing’, ‘Bull Black’ and ‘You and I’ are quite close to a classic trio from the S/T too

Love you Boney but your defense of Schmilco is almost as transparently biased as any conversation I've ever had about Brand New or Yellowcard. Schmilco is a 2.5/5 for me, I could see a 3/5 easily. It's not a bad record by any means, and I realize this isn't a huge stylistic departure from it, but it's just better. I think you'll enjoy my soundoff, it sheds light on this album compared to Schmilco, the evolution from one to the other, and more.

Amplifier is great but it's not a tune that makes me want to keep listening to it - while Wilco albums are always great they have aspects of a highlight band too, often (but not always) an epic. Schmilco - "If I Ever Was a Child"; Whole Love - "One Sunday Morning", "Art of Almost"; Wilco (The Album) - "One Wing; Sky Blue Sky - "Impossible Germany", "On and On and On"; A Ghost Is Born - "At Least That's What You Said", "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", "Theologians"; YHF - (doesn't really count because everything's a highlight there but) "Jesus, Etc.", “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”; Summerteeth - "She's a Jar", "Via Chicago", "A Shot in the Arm"; Being There - "Misunderstood", "The Lonely 1"; hell even A.M. - "Box Full of Letters", "Passenger Side".
"Quiet Amplifier" has a LOT of competition among Wilco epics and it doesn't stack up to any of them really.

Wilco is such a safe band so it's hilarious to me that this thread is sparking any contention/debate at all. Im enjoying it.

Theologians a highlight?
Well I never 🤔
How about we step outside and work this out mano-a-mano? {cracks knuckles}

Quiet Amplifier (arty one), Everyone Hides (peppy one), Love is Everywhere (for the guitar lovers in the audience) and Hold Me Anyway (retro’y one) pretty much check all the Wilco highlight boxes in all their classic modes.
Boney being a grump !
