I think this is the first time I'd consider Driver's vocals to sound "silly" on a record. usually his vocal experiments come off as rehearsed/ refined avant-garde musings, but on here it sounds like an amateur trying way too hard.

as much as I think he's pretentious, I can't agree with that. he's a classically trained musician and in the past it did show.

classically trained just means you went to school for music/ trained under a teacher. and he did that 2nd part w/ Zorn.

Nice review, Ben - disagree on the points about 'An Eye for a Lie' though, I think it's the most exciting part of the record because of how bizarre and misplaced it is. Reminds me of Hunter Hunt Hendrix's rapping in Liturgy's The Ark Work of Kel Valhaal's New Introductory Lectures (although Toby here sounds like K-9 from Doctor Who).

Blasphemy is easily one of Kayo Dot's weakest album, which is a shame really since it has some nice ideas, just not very cohesive or enthralling as a whole. Also the lyrics and pirate imagery are eye-rollingly bad lmao

The lyrics don't bother me, this story sort of feels like a companion to Hubardo, which makes sense since it's the same writer.

@JJ: Thanks, and interesting take on An Eye For a Lie. I've seen other reviews praise it too. I guess it’s subjective. I actually thought of Liturgy a couple times when I've listened to this album too.

I thought Driver was taught by Yusef Lateef, not Zorn.

John Zorn's label released Choirs of the Eye and Toby's first solo album, but I don't think Toby was Zorn's student.

I'd be interested in how their set list has changed from before. It seems like their shows from the past few years have been exclusively Hubardo, Coffins, and Plastic House. I know they recently added Gemini as an encore too, which is sweet.

Disagree, this is how I felt about They Are The Shield as well as some tracks off the last few records (All the pain in the wide world for example). Super cheesy sounding.

I'm about to dive in, sad with what I'm seeing in these comments but not shocked either. Shame. There was a time where Toby could do no wrong.
